Cam fault watch this space....

So on the way back from the Ace the other week all the instrumentation illuminates, speedo needle up & down.... mmmm not good me thinks. The dreaded 'go to dealer' 'airbag failure' 'MSP failure' all stack up. Not too much to go on on the www. A few reported incidents but no solutions! Rumours on the www go from loose wire's - earth ? to full NIT failure 5K + gulp! :battered:

Check and tighten the battery terminals, loose'ish yes but OK. Now I've got airbag warning etc all on so pluck up the courage to call Qwen's, they looked after the car for the previous owner. They seemed OK when I first asked about the car before I purchased so first point of contact.
Negotiate a what can you do for me price and although not ideal we settle on £60 for the first 1/2 hr diagnostic and then £120 ph there after......

Pitch up today and the guys are all over it for me bang on 9am. 10 mins later they rule out NIT failure, phew! However there is still a fault on the cam wire which they can't clear. It could be, they say, a trapped wire, loose connection or fault with the unit which is conveniently located up under the front suspension.
So it's still a days + investigation + parts + labour so although not a give car back to dealer and walk away situation it's going to be a few ££'s. So will keep you posted in a couple of weeks time when it gets in.

Must say though, they did say if it was the cam unit because it's unusual they would look at contributing towards the cost of the part and labour, which I didn't expect to hear. They will also do the tie rods while its there as per the recall.

So go to get the CC out and they say no charge! :omg:

So generally impressed with them to date.

So a full dash illumination could be as simple as a loose battery terminal or the dreaded 5k+ NIT failure.

OK still no conclusion to the fault, they though they had cleared it and then it came back again. Now they are insinuating NIT failure, gulp!

Oh dear. Well, get a used one or at Ace next month, bring some screw drivers and we can try my NIT and see if that clears it.

OK Owens mailed me today to confirm its the can unit under the front wing. So now we wait for Italy to wake up to 'discuss' the price as Owens agreed to do...
At least it's not the NIT unit or I would have just walked away.

Ha, so Italy told me where to stick their goodwill, obviously my name has got around Italy Re. Certain 'connections' and 'disputes' I've had with our dear Italian friends in the past. Yes I love you too SRL x.
I have a Italian friend who says he knows someone who knows someone etc..... But Owens have gone ahead and ordered it, guess they are sick of it in their workshop and if that did come off it would still be sitting in their W/S for another month. They did take 20% off the part price, which was nice of them so guess that's the route now.
So in theory I should have a working vehicle sitting on the drive when I return to our fair land and luckily not 5k lighter in the NIT pocket.
Now where's those TVR keys.......

I had an CEL indicating a cam vario failure. It turned out to be oil leaking down the wire insulation and into the electrical connector. A good clean and a bit of splot to seal it and it's fine now. About 6 months later the other side did exactly the same but it was a lot easier to diagnose and fix. Both sides now ok.

Well the car is back, the main fault is poss still not 100% sorted as the system shut down on the way back last night! They still claim its not the NIT unit. The suspension fault has been sorted by spending £800 on a new control unit, with a 20% contribution from Owens.

I forgot to tell them to NOT wash the car, it's been there for 7 weeks so I know the state it was in looking at the cars in the compound. However they kindly washed it with 240 grit so have had to order extreme cutting compound to deal with the issue. I kid you not after my lovely grill restro, the front looked better than new now it looks like a uncared for 6 year old car. Even the wife pointed it out! I shall be having words..........

Oh FFS. Such basics. From top end dealers you expect a bit more nous. Good luck for a speedy resolution.

How the **** do they not know how to wash cars at HR Owen?

How long have you had the car for - did you buy it privately or from a dealer?

Our new disco - told the dealer verbally and in two e-mails NOT to wash the car, guess what they did? I've told them if the detailer finds a single mark that means he has to get his machine out they'll be paying for his time.

It really annoys me how virtually every single dealer, and even a lot of indies, ignores such a simple request. They employ minimum wage to clean cars and dont give them anything more than a single sponge, a bucket and some fairy liquid (well - aldi own brand equivalent)

I could take some pics, although you didn't see it before I'm no stranger to polishing cars and know the finish I had was as good as a top end detailer if not better as I didn't have a commercial time constraint. Seeing is really believing though. They have million £ fezzezas in there WFT!

Roger, your pictures on the OCD grill resto thread say enough, I would think. Treat it as a before and after and surely you have enough to encourage them to get a pro out to remedy their own handiwork.
