Car play goodness: too good to be true?

Has anyone tried one of these?

I *assume* you connect your phone to the tablet and the tablet connects via bluetooth. Clearly it's not going to be anything like as good as a fully integrated, CANBUS connected solution but it's a *lot* cheaper.

Anyone got first hand experience?

<edit> Should be a question mark on the title

Not that one but I had one in my qp. It was a wired version so phone plugged in and was very quick to connect. It used fm modulator for sound. I was impressed with it.

Super! Do you recall what happened if you were listening to the radio and waze tried to give you an instruction at all?

You have to play radio via an app if you want radio and satnav. It had a 3.5mm jack also if you did not want to use fm modulator. You cannot use the car radio and have waze cut in from the carplay unit. Mine has a speaker built in though so you could use that for waze and use car radio as normal.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the input!

Talk about CarPlay - in my new Defender CarPlay and sometimes even Bluetooth get interrupted - it’s usually near traffic lights (I think) or security cameras or something like that. If I’m stationary near a point like this it sometimes even disconnects my Bluetooth. Very annoying and it doesn’t happen with my BMW. Has anyone had anything like this?

Well it arrived today, and I have to say I am quite impressed.
Nicely my iPhone will connect to both it and the car, and route the call through whichever interface initiates the call. This is good because the speakers in the box are a bit poor (although I still have some tweaking to do)

So front and rear camera, 10.7" screen. Recording, collision detection, full car play integration. I'm so far impressed.

Next problem is mounting it. There's nowhere flat on the Ghibli. Closest is right in front of the clock. This is a shame, but I suspect needs must. Currently it's stuck down, but it's a bit wobbly when you want to do something so I'm desperately doing the man maths that says even if I have to fork out £600 for an ebay dash to put it back to stock (which I probably won't because when I sell, I'll just sell as is), I'm still ahead of the game by quite a lot compared to getting an android unit and dashcam installed in the head. So it may be drilled into the dash

How does the reverse camera know when to kick in?
12v trigger wire from your rear brake bulb near the camera normally

Well it's not a revers*ing* camera (I already have one) It's a rear facing facing dashcam for those idiot driver moments. So it's on and recording all the time. Otherwise @alastairb would have the right of it. At least I don't *think* it's a reversing camera. Shall we say the manual may have lost something in translation. Like words. Lots of words. And found some other words. Like diver. Apparently you can use this for diver recording.....

So not suitable for a white Lotus Esprit then?
