Has anyone had this done on their 4200 or Gransport either with a main dealer or indie and how much did it cost??????

its in the fuel tank, or next to it, I think it filter the vapours. It should be done as part of a major service but often, its not done.

Urby,

I had the carbon cannister changed by Emblem Sports Cars on my 2006 QP by Emblem Sports Cars recently as part of the 43,500 mile service. The cost of the part (original) was £154.50 plus VAT.

Benny

As I understand it the carbon cannister provides an environmental and to a lesser extent a fuel economy function. It does this by capturing vapours from the petrol tank (at the end of a journey when when the engine is switched off) thus preventing them from escaping into the atmosphere. The stored the fumes are then recycled back to the fuel tank or engine intake for combustion as required. The cannister itself is suprisingly bulky..... About the size of an A4 box file.

Regards,

Paul

Item 1 £145 plus vat and delivery and its tricky to fit as you have to take the boot liner out and thats no easy job.

I replaced the lambda's when I had the Larini's fitted. All four cost £420 incl from Eurospares plus an hour or two labour, though on mine the labour cost got lost in the fitting of the exhaust system.

The fuel vapour filter is £175.00 incl plus labour.

HR Owen wanted £1200 for the cannister and the lamba sensors fitted. They did admit that most owners do not bother until either they get a warning light appear or until they have problems starting car when hot. Typically the forst symptom is failure to start the car when hot without several attempts.

Urby,

The costs of parts alone (Lambda sensors plus carbon cannister) amounts to a figure around £550. It is hard to see how the balance for fitting can reasonably total £1200. I am willing to bet that Maserati Independants will quote a good deal less for this work. For my part I decided to replace the sensors and cannister thus keeping to the Maserati service schedule. I was comforted by the fact that these items do not normally need replacing for several years and many thousands of miles.

Paul

Paul, thanks for the details. Anything that helps fuel economy is worth having!

If not replaced or it fails won't affect how the car performs or in any other way.....merely environmental?

I can't comment from personal experience on the vapour filter, so I won't surmise, but when I asked Shiltech to change mine as a matter of course rather than need, they said my money was better spend elsewhere. As for the lambda's you'll know if and when they're going as your engine will tell you. Lumpy, hesitant, just generally unhappy. For what it's worth mine did 70K miles and they didn't actually need changing when I did.

To be fair to HR Owen they did say it was only an advisory thing from Maserati and in their opinion don't bother till it becomes a problem especuially on a car thats only done 12,000 miles

I have heard independant Maserati specialists argue that these items should be serviced at the specified mileage and not exchanged on the basis of the time factor alone. Personally I was happy to take that advice.
