Carbon Caninister and lamba sensors

If not replaced or it fails won't affect how the car performs or in any other way.....merely environmental?

I dare say it is more of a theoretical issue than than a real problem. That said, I am told that the carbon cannsiter can smell of petrol if it is left in place indefinately.
