Good luck Ben.

The car may pong a bit on the way back from the new cats + welding, don't worry too much about it!

BTW, I accept Larini's R&D cost puts the price up somewhat, which I see as fine for the GranTurismo tubes but why a premium on exhausts for a car they stopped making 4200's five years ago!

Flat screen tellies don't cost 4 grand anymore!

I think you'll find a Bang and Olufsen one does Pat , a simple LG or Samsung does not i grant you , but what price would you get for a 2nd hand Samsung .....................i rest my case

Yeah...but the B&O F/S TV....is just a fancied up screen made by only 2 or 3 makers of the same............ie same screen goes by Sony or Panasonic brand names etc

I think the flat screen analogy was a bad one. Larini is probably made to order therefore they they don't have thousands of 4200 exhausts in a warehouse somewhere that they could slash the price on.
They are a premium product, cheaper options are available.

Yep, could be the case.

Would like to know what the mark-up is, still. I really would like the sports cats, but I still can't get over the fact that it will cost me close to 3 grand to buy and fit just part of my exhaust section.

If we could see and admire the thing on a daily basis that would probably alleviate the pain somewhat!

My view is that you need to decide what you want from the exhaust and then value each offering against your requirements. I don't know how much additional power the Larini option offers against a Tubi/Quiksilver/Prospeed/whatever but would be willing to wager it isn't very much. Noise is subjective and with Larini you get 'their' noise whereas Prospeed (or even MIJ who did my 3200 exhaust) allow you to tune it to your preference. I would imagine that build quality is of the very highest when it comes to the Larini, but will Prospeed with many years experience in bespoke exhausts be that far behind? Bearing in mind you can't see anything other than the pipes protruding from the rear in all circumstances other than up on a ramp I think I would struggle to justify a 400-500% difference in cost. Again, all subjective and purely down to opinion, but I cannot see how the Larini is 4-5 times better.

and thats the key to it all really - a 458 Italia aint 5 times better than a GranSport despite was the price says - Hakkasan aint 5 times better than wok u like- etc etc - but we all like to treat ourselves to something a bit special here and there - the question is, should it be the exhaust on your motorcar? as they say, you pays your money takes your choice!!

Ok - so I'm all booked in for 7th December! Will be quite a long day - they asked if I can get the car there for 9am - but should be well worth it. And the drive home will hopefully be good fun.

Will let you know how they get on.

Cheers,
Ben.

I'll keep a listen out as you go over the Severn crossing Ben...

Larini, Tubi, and others Capristo, etc...yes they are all expensive, but beuitifully made, quality items....and will outlast our time as the car's owners...
Here is one other point, a cost comparison, dated 30-Jun-2010 ( Larini vs OEM (Eurospares price) ), for my QP.
Sports cats 1561.55 vs 2256.76
Centre section 309.76 vs 359.72
Link pipes 273.78 vs 191.67
Rear Boxes 1550.02 vs 1778.40
VAT (17.5%) 646.64 vs 802.64
Total, Larini 4341.75 vs OEM 5389.19

Thats very interesting - hadn't realised the stock items were so expensive. I won't be junking my old exhaust bits when they come off the car then. Assuming there is some life left in them - which at 35000 miles I would hope there is...

All my OEM bits are bubble wrapped and stacked in the garage,
either to be put back on the car when sale time comes, or to be sold on an auction site :D

If the OEM bits get put back on, then the Larini bits will go up for sale...
and in general, they go for about 50% of the new price :D

IMO Larini has a better sound than Tubi, but I guess the beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

Hi Ben,

Good luck tomorrow. If you get a chance, can you ask Charlie if he is able to do the four pipes from the cats to the manifold rather than the two, a la Larini?

The standard two full bore pipes around the axle ground rather easily if your car is lowered (probably no problem at all on a stock 4200 though).

Cheers,
pat
