GranTurismo drops to Neutral

I know some of you are already thinking of telling me to use the search function :). I have been checking.

I haven’t been using the car much recently with the lock down. I am now going for drives just to keep the car in decent shape (or to get away from the family). I do use the Ctek tender every 2 to 3 weeks.

I took the car for a drive (knowing the battery was low) and the car was warmed up. It dropped in to Neutral then picked up gear, whilst cruising in 5th/6th gear. No error message or issues for the rest of the drive. I took it for a drive again and tried to replicate the issue. When accelerating even pressing on the car is fine and no issues, even in MC Shift mode. It’s only done it twice when steady cruising so it’s almost like the car thinks i have taken the feet off the pedal? I also start the car after the lights go out.

I contacted AV and they suggested using it more and monitoring it. The car has done 34k miles on original clutch and at last service (1k miles ago) the clutch wear was 31%. AV have been great by the way.

Should I be thinking about replacing the clutch or anything else I should check whilst I have some free time? I also read this can be a quirk with these cars?

Thanks in advance.

AV will know best. Could just be low battery issue and you will know how stroppy they are without being used.

Mine did this on the original clutch at 35k miles but my wear reading was way higher...a likely sign of the clutch slipping and on its way out but strange if your reading is only 31%

I have been in a car that did this. It was just a relearn and it was fine from then on.

Drove it on a 40miles trip today and everything behaved perfectly, maybe I do just need to use it more.
Maybe ctek a bit more. 2 weeks aboslute max on mine. Anymore and it throws the Christmas tree and my tracker is disconnected.

I will charge it on ctek every week as the colder weather doesn’t help. I have the Vodafone tracker fitted and wouldn’t mind removing it. I am going to ask if it’s possible to disconnect/remove it on the next service.

Some people have said it can destroy the battery after prolonged trickle. I am not sure what prolonged is.

Ok, I might test that theory as no sign of problems yet - Battery is about £90 at worst if it did cause a problem

The whole point is that they won't destroy the battery....

If you leave it on a standard charger (i.e. +12v constant) they yes, you probably will destroy it.

Not sure. I know I have read of some that have said it caused problems, but then the battery could have been goosed anyway. I run mine a week on/off. It may help the battery or the charger not running constantly dunno.

What CTEK is recommended? As I have a standard 12V charger and wanted to start using it.

MXS 5.0 is a good one. But I suspect they're much of a muchness.

My GT was on one for (sometimes) several weeks. No battery issues.

Tis true you know, batteries like a bit of a cycle. They are also sensitive to mismatches in the float voltage from a charger / conditioner.

I like to do what Gaz does, cycle it on and off the conditioner. It was recomended to me by the battery guy at a large telecoms co. They test themselves and buy their blocks a million at a time, so I take his word for it.

@elan Did you get this sorted?
Or did it go away on its own?

Last winter, when near freezing temps, mine dropped into neutral few times, only when dropping from 3rd to 2nd. A quick pull of the paddle and all is well.

It's been fine all year, but now the weather has got a bit cooler this last week or so, its started again.
Its only when the gearbox is cold, as once it's up to temp and the mc-shift light comes on the dash, it doesn't do it.
Only in sport manual from 3rd to 2nd.
Tried sport auto when cold the other day (I never use auto normally) and it doesn't do it. Switched back to manual and it did it again.

I assume/hope it may just need a relearn.

Car is used almost daily, now on 27k miles. Last clutch reading I had was 50% circa 8k miles and 18mths ago.
