Some people have said it can destroy the battery after prolonged trickle. I am not sure what prolonged is.
Both my cars are permanently on CTEK when not in use. Neither have come to any harm. Once the battery reaches full charge on a trickle basis (so no frying the battery) it knocks back. When the immobiliser and other circuit drops the voltage across the battery the trickle charger cuts back in - this mimics what happens when you drive the car - take out a large voltage on cranking and recharge by the alternator which has a diode to maintain the direction of charge as well as convert AC to DC and diverts charge when full to avoid cooking the battery.
Mine are typically sitting on the CTEK for 6 months continuously without ever being started. When I come to use them, they start first turn. No battery has ever been damaged.
