I got myself a small plate and it looks soooo much better than the standard size and I'll take my chance with plod if I get stopped.

If the actual letter size is correct then it should be legal..!! Mine is chopped down to the absolute legal minimum, I got it made by an official plate factory in Sheffield and they double checked all the regs to make sure it was legal, not expensive either..!!

Not many cops about these days, so if you do get stopped it will be by pure accident and very unlucky..!!

I bought a 5 figure/letter combo, you're allowed to use a smaller plate but all other aspects must be standard

Sort of true but apparently some plates are larger than they actually need to be legally..??

I was thinking of getting an Italian sized front plate for my QP. I saw WOODY'S plate at McGraths. That looks Italian sized.

Not sure theres a max size, but on rear of a number of cars the plate is quite a bit bigger, as long as numbers/letters correct size and spaced ok......skies the limit....maybe

It is, apparently, a legal requirement to have a dealer or plate suppliers post code at the bottom of the front plate. No post code = not legal.

My plates have both the suppliers postcode and the BS mark on the bottom right hand side (currently BS AU 145d) so should be 100% legal as they comply with both DfT and the MOT testers guidance. I wonder how often I will get stopped by PC Plod? It's bound to happen no matter how "legal" the plates are...

When I was getting my plates, I checked out the possibility of using foreign sized plates, as it was an Italian car, the upshot is no you can't legally, as the car is registered in the UK..!! Show plates are an option, but not actually legal either..!! If you have a private plate that does not easily look like a UK registration, then you might get away with a smaller Italian style plate, if you do get pulled you might get a fine for it though, depends on the plod..!!

It's just that most try to make it in to an advert and make it as big as they can, my plate the letters are tiny, but readable close up..!!

Yes, I dislike being a mobile advertising hoarding too! If you get plates made by one of the online places you can get plates with just the tiny supplier name and post code which are pretty discreet as they deliberately use the smallest legal font for this reason. I used http://www.platesforcars.co.uk and they were fine, I have a 5 digit plate and ordered their smallest legal plate size for the front, which can take 5 digits at legal size and just sits on the mounting plate nicely. Some of the online places also do show plates, where you can get anything but as noted they are NOT legal for road use. I think there's a thread somewhere about front plate for a QP which was repositioned lower than the normal mounting plate, which is another option.

Without measuring it, I think my front plate is about 8" long and just short of standard height..!! Not as small height wise as the MAF260 above, but shorter lengthwise..!! My mounting bracket is only a fraction shorter than the actual plate width..!!
