M300,
At least now you are armed with all the relevant figures, so nobody can do a snow job on you..??

That's why this forum is great, as Loz mentioned we all know a lot more know (well those with the knowledge helpfully share it on here) to avoid changing parts just for the sake of it and also finding cheaper alternatives.

Good luck 300, I'm hoping it's the relay.

Just to update you all - it was the pump....Relay was fried and another fuse apparently. I'm going to pick her up a bit later so luckily not too much damage on the wallet front! Again - thanks all for your responses!

M300,
So glad you got it sorted. Funny enough I have been talking to Ludwig in Germany and it sounds as though he might have the same issue. I have pointed him in the direction of the relay first and if that is not it then it's a pump. He has only had the car for a few weeks, so he is not too pleased. What was the final cost for yours, any idea yet...???
Cheers

Ludwig,
The Maserati OE part will cost you a lot more and it is the same thing. Try the relay first, it may be a low cost fix.

Sorry that your misfortune has prompted me, but I have now bought a new pump relay from BMW and intend to change it this weekend. A relay is a considerably smaller cost to a pump.

.
Some info for those that have not seen it...
http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/showthread.php/8629-F1-pump-relay-BMW-alternative

The Pump Relay. Manufactured by Tyco/Siemens ... superceded by the upgradad V23134-B57-X152 ... this relay is also*supplied to BMW as an ABS relay, BMW Part No*6136-1393403, and can be purchased new for just over £18

The below is from another forum...
It seems to me that some preventative maintenance might reduce instances of pump failure and in my opinion such maintenance may best apply to the relay.

The pump motor presents an inductive load to the relay contacts. When the load is removed (ie, when the contacts open) the back EMF generated by the pump motor coil causes an arc as the contacts separate. ... The arc causes the contacts to erode, and can also cause the contact to weld. So the pump either fails to operate, or continuously operates (and then burns out, I guess).

So regular replacement of the relay must surely reduce the possibility of pump failure.

I removed the relay from my 52-plate 4200 (38k miles) and dismantled it. I attach a photo of the contacts. You can see that one contact surface is very pitted. What you can't quite see is that the other contact is very eroded.

hi
I have ordered an alfa pump (part no. 51736315) and hopefully will get it next week.
Having already exchanged the relay for a BMW 6136 - 1393403
There was a 30 amp relay- fuse before. Have replaced it for a 20 A fuse, because a 30 A fuse might
have caused the damage to the pump.

in the meantime I have trouble to get to the pump, because it's hidden behind lots of other gear.
I wanted to know, if it's possible to remove this crossbeam in order the have easier access to
the pump. Perhaps someone can tell me, if this is possible.

Yes that the correct workshop way to do it , at least thats what they base ther pricing on ££££££s ,when the actual way most do it is to remove the boot liner and heat shield , thats how your picture has been taken , mine took me 1 hour an 20 mins start to finish , easier to top up the fluid that way and disconnect/ reconnect the electrical connection

hello loz,
could you please confirm that I can take this "crossbeam" or whatever the right technical term is, away,
in order to get easier access to the pump.

ludwig do a search on F1 pump in the tech section , there is a pictoral how to , far easier to gain access through the boot , removing carpets , spare wheel liner and heat shield

The techs do drop the subframe member but they dont remove it totally as far as im aware , just enough room to get your hands in , but as i said far easier through the boot

Arrrrgghhhh..........so annoyed. she broke down on me twice over the weekend with the gearbox light illuminating again. Only upside was that the 2nd time it happened, it was literally when i tried to select reverse to park outside my front door last night. another trip back to Autofficina it is then!!!

Ludwig - have you managed to get yours sorted then?

Guys - when the AA man came to look at the car before towing it, the bleeding thing started!!! he didn't have maserati error codes list on him but he did have an alfa one.(bear with me on this) my misses told him the error light that came on and funnily enough for selespeed alfa's this warning light means that the gearbox oil/transmission fluid is too hot it causes the F1 system to fail.

I was set to ignore what he said but then realised that over the weekend the car only seemed to have issues once it was up to operating temperatures and had been driven for about an hour or more. Once it cooled down (i.e. over night) it was fine again and the pump would whir in to action when i unlocked the car.

Does anyone know if such a thing is possible in the maserati. i appreciate it may be stretching it a bit that same fault light on dashboard in maserati is the same in an Alfa.

Cheers

No idea M300, but it's an interesting angle to look at, presumably there must be a temperature sensor in there somewhere..?? Maybe the oil levels are a bit down and the reduced oil is getting hotter quicker..??
