Brilliant job, the key in alignment is to remember that the wheel has to turn off centre by 90 deg+ before it will locate the cancelling lugs and engage on the way back.

Good job. I didn't realize there were arrows on the back and an Alfa logo. Clock springs are fiddly things. I think that is why I resorted to the recreational drugs, but don't we all in some way or another.

Having a day off work, I got to grips with the airbag cover today as it looked bad and let down the interior. My eyes were drawn to it as soon as I looked into the car before buying it. This was how it has looked since I got the car.[SUB][/SUB]

I started to peel back the material and found it to be very cheap and nasty vinyl which was surprisingly stiff and brittle like some medieval parchment, so I decided only to attend to the affected area rather than remove the whole cover.

I removed the remnants of old hardened glue with a petrol soaked rag and then gave the airbag case a good going over with emery paper to key the surface. Add liberal coatings of spray glue to both surfaces, go for a ciggy and coffee break and return to apply the cover.

Initially it looked no better than before but after heating the area courtesy of the wife's hair dryer, I was able to straighten out the creases. I returned to it after about 30 minutes, gave it a final stretch and tucked away the edges with a spreader.

Quite pleased with the result.

What I find difficult to comprehend is how the last owner was recently willing to spend the best part of 3k on brakes and a service, but happy to continue driving a car with non-cancelling indicators and a manky steering wheel. Hey ho, different strokes I suppose.

I feel like I am now in remission, in as much as I am between tribulations, I shall now go for a drive :happy:

The wheel looks good now, the wrinkly cover has been an issue on a few cars, it sometimes also happens to the cover on the top of the dash, it starts to lift. Well done with the work, looking good and working as it should, brilliant..!!

I look forward to the glove box light too bright issue or/and the change of washer jet thread.
In all seriousness I was disappointed you did not fully recover the hub centre as that is something I want to do and wanted someone else to have the pain first!

To be honest Phil I wasn't looking forward to doing it myself but fate dictated that it should be languishing on my bench due to my other issues and it made sense to get it done. I am fairly confident on the spanners but trim is not a strong point for me.

Thankfully, in reality it was pretty straightforward. Once I had untucked the spare material over the top edge where it wraps around the back, the rest of it almost seemed to want to fall off itself without much encouragement.

To be honest I was just too eager to get it built up for the weekend as I have been off the road for over a week with the problems I encountered removing the boss, then having to make the puller and working late all week.

Now I know what I'm doing, if I spot any signs of it starting to look untidy again, I would have no hesitation in doing the whole thing. I reckon 30-45 minutes should do it.

Go on. You know you want to.

And you Catman! You lot encouraged me to knock seven bells out of my steering wheel boss, so I did. Your turn for the brave pills I reckon.

Hey, AG, how did you line that white cylinder up in the end was it 12 & 6 or 9 & 3?

Just curious. Cheers,

6 and 12 for the lobes, which means 3 and 9 for the keyway slots is the correct position for when the steering is in the straight ahead position.

Mine must have been incorrectly refittted at some point as it was lobes at 3 and 9 when I removed the boss.

The only *really* scary experience I've had working on cars was with Mrs Catman's 146. I was replacing the seatbelt for reasons that now escape me. I was doing up the securing bolt on the bottom mount, with a certain amount of force, as it wasn't seating properly.

I then realised that I had it on the ****, and the locating stud wasn't near the hole.

What *should* have done is slack off the bolt, re-align it, then re-tighten.

What I *actually* did was hit it with the spanner. Whereupon it move enough to allow the stud and hole to line up, and the entire tension built up then drove the assembly onto the body work.



There was a bang.



There was much smoke

The seatbelt was now *very* tight across the seat.

There was suddenly appeared steel cable.

And I could still count up to 10. I really *really* counted my fingers.

The leather boss is pretty well fixed to the airbag cover. I'll pass TYVM.
