Hello Gents,

Good to meet you all.

Only just joined this forum today seeking some answers and advice from those in the know!

I have owned my 08 4.2 GT for almost a year now and still love it, however have just taken it in for my first service with the dealer (where it was purchased and has stamps for years 2 and 4) and have a few advisories...which include;

Major
- Right hand cam cover leaking at rear lower edge.
- Front brakes pads 90% worn.
- Front brake discs heavily ridged and vent holes blocked.

Minor
- Both chassis plates badly corroded.
- Right hand door striker plate plastic sleeve damaged and partially missing.

I would love to hear if you have any pointers on tracking down these parts at competitive prices (without scrimping on the quality of the brand) or recommended independent garages in the South East that you have used. Apologies if this sort of content has been asked before, if it has please direct me the original post - it will be greatly appreciated!

On older models 4200/GS's, leaks were prevalent around rocker covers......

Discs and pads horrifically expensive........am not sure if we did finally nail down suitable much cheaper alternatives as we did for the 4200/GS's

I'll have a look for you

Hi Matt

Welcome. I use Giallo at Hildenborough (between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge) and highly recommend them. Very knowledgable, reliable, competitively priced and dependable. They are clear and upfront on work and prices, and so far I've found them excellent to deal with, especially compared to other garages I've dealt with in the past. It's Mathew's business - he's a good Maserati guy.

They're not too far for you - around the M25 to junction 4 and just a few minutes south...

Good luck, Simon

Hello Matt, and welcome. That looks like a Lancaster car, judging by the photo. Not far from there is Grimaldi, in Halstead. Give Rob a call - very capable and with some interesting cars to look at in there, generally. Eurospares is also in the same park, which is handy. Worth checking their web site for a price of the door striker plate (is it DIY-repairable? - I can't picture it) and also try David Askew.

Can you explain where the chassis plates are? Interesting that despite bad corrosion it's only a minor advisory.

Can you get the brake discs skimmed? If they've been done before you likely won't be able to do them again, but Lancaster can probably advise.

Let us know how you get on. Good luck!

Front brake pads and discs are expensive so an independent will only save you on labour. What mileage are you on?

Cannot help on the leak but garages always give a wish list. I always ask the service advisor what they would replace if it was their car? That starts you off then you have a sensible chat.

Wow. Thanks all for the initial responses.

The Car is on 22,000 miles. The chasis plates are the equivalent to VIN plates I believe.

I will be pulling the car out and taking it into http://www.giallo.co.uk for the major works. I too found Matt great on the phone. I've taken a good look at eurospares which might indeed become the pilgrimage for most of these parts. Giallo's also advised about skimming the plates, so lets see if this is possible.

Its a maranello's one btw.

Thanks all!

Matt

Hi Matt,
A warm welcome to the forum..!! The 4200 can have leaks around the rocker covers, a low cost fix and you can buy the gasket material to do yourself if you wish..!! Brakes you can fit the Ferrari 550 discs (Brembo) and pads can be a variety of makes, but get good quality..!! Other bits you can get from Eurospares, or such as David Askew..!!
Cheers

Great, that's a low mileage for pad replacement but then it's a low annual mileage car.

I would be interested to know what you end up paying for the various brake works.

Depends if there is enough left on the discs for a skim and why have they grooved so badly..??

It was explained to me that when your holes get clogged and rusty, the rust actually acts as an abrasive and grooves the discs.

Might not be totally true, though.

I could imagine there is some truth in that, I would think that inferior pads might contribute to the problem, I have never had hole clogging with decent pads..!!

I'll share the bill as soon as I have it. Maranello's already offering to reduce the labour further... but the work although not exhaustive is still racking up!
