Phil at PK uses millers for 32s and I have never had an issue with it. Has a higher temp spec as well I believe.

As I understand it, in order to state that they are racing oils, there are a number of additional tests required. Millers and Selenia are both classed this way. I have put Shell Helix into every Maserati I've owned except the 32 (Selenia) and wouldn't hesitate to put it into a 32.

I've recently sent some Selenia to analysis after 400 kms of use, and the results were much below the original specs. Viscosity on 100C 18 instead of 23, on 40C 115 instead of 187.

I wouldn't think it would make that much difference on a daily/relatively low mileage car, that has the oil dutifully changed when required. However if it is a track weapon, or regularly thrashed to an inch of it's life then, yes, probably best with something a bit more modern. We all want the best for our cars but the oil debate can be a bit of a mine field.

Also, the degradation may well have been accounted for when the original specification was made. How would we know?

IMO, so long as you stick to the manufacturers recommended weight and use a fully synthetic oil then it doesn't matter what brand you put in there.

What is more important is the regular change of oil. As you know, when oil gets hot the viscosity drops. In order to maintain thickness at high temperatures the oil has viscosity modifiers in the form of long chain polymers. Without these the oil would be too thin to provide the correct lubrication when it is warm. The action of the oil pump, as well as areas like the cam lobe squeezing on the valve bucket, serve to chop these polymer chains up. This reduces the ability of the viscosity modifiers to do their job (not a good thing).

Then you have the problem of combustion gases escaping past the rings and into the block. These change the chemical composition of the oil, making it more acidic. This is believed to be an issue with the titanium conrods fitted to Ferrari engines which have run a bearing.

I really do believe in regular oil changes and never run any of my cars on long life service plans (my 2008 Audi A8 has had more oil changes during my ownership than it had in the 6 years before I bought it). Even my shed that I only paid £75 for has annual oil changes!

Hi everyone

If 15w50 was used ISO 10w60, should I do a new oil change immediately or can drive 1000km and then do it ?

Next oil change put the proper spec oil in. I'm amazed there are still cars with owners out there using the wrong spec oil if I'm honest.

Who prescribed 15W 50?

I once put Mobil 1 in my Lancia Thema turbo (with the Integrale engine) instead of the o/e oil. I got oil blowback through the turbo and had to remove all the turbo pipes to clean them. Then I blew the engine up as a screw tightening a jubilee clip on the pipe was in a slightly different place and jammed the arm on the end of the throttle cable wide open. The big end went before I could react and turn the engine off. I paid for a recon at Ring Engineering in Southall and it didn't sound right. I went back, threw the keys at them, and said don't call me until it's fixed properly. A few days later I had my first nervous breakdown and was out of commission for quite a while. When I was well enough for my wife to tell me what had happened it turned that the car had "been written off on a test drive, the other (old lady) driver admitted liability" and the insurance company was offering £435. I bargained them up to a grand, which was far less than I had paid for the recon. When I saw the car at Ring it had a dent in both front wings and deep triangular dent in the middle of the front bumper. They said the other driver "panicked and hit the car three times. Clearly it had been written off deliberately to avoid any cost to them and an 'auntie' had co-operated in the scam. I was in no state to take things any further at the time.

I have always used o/e oils in anything with decent power ever since.

That was at Christmas too. This Christmas eve my dog was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Oh, how I miss the seasonal IRA bombing campaign.

Happy Christmas everybody.
Steve.

No one did, just found out this, so I wonder if can drive few km with it or change it right now.
Mechanic will correct his mistake, but I have a 500km trip planned...
