Yesterday evening was a perfect example of using the wife's plug in hybrid for local running around.
It was fully charged, and being sad I could look at exactly the amount of charge it took to fully charge the battery the night before (empty to full) via the smart plug. So a true value before losses.
The round trip journey was 24 miles, in the dark, cold, cabin heating at 20 degree C. Up hill and down dale, and it just made it home all fully on EV mode. This was therefore a true typical trip, not one all on the flat (hills make a big difference, you use far more going up than the regeneration going down! and we have a lot of hills), with no lights or cabin heating.
This equated to 2.44 miles per Kwh, or 3p a mile or the equivalent of 217 mpg at current local petrol prices.
For us, the hybrid combination works very well, and so would a full EV if within range of home.

I worked for Europecar PT for a number of years and they don't buy all of their stock.

They also lease them with an agreement to return them at a set milage, and in turn those cars go back onto the MD forecourt as one owner and 12k miles etc.
Worked for a company with GM connections. Our company cars were all Vauxhalls and were turned over v quickly after miles or short dates, presumably for easy resale, though what they did with one of ours with a firework burn on the roof remains a mystery….

The other part of the problem with the Hertz EVs was maintaining them. Because 80% were on long term hire to Uber/Woober etc the damage costs were rather large. Can’t believe no one saw that coming!!

Looks like there is more to this tale.

According to an Interview he gave on a Youtube channel (Geoff buys cars ) this is the second time this has happened with this particular car, and the car has been back to JL several times for this problem ...... the truth will out at some stage we presume .............JL are already in reputation survival mode are all the recent issues regarding RR Anti theft devices not working as they should resulting in the fact their own insurers refuse to insure the cars

Well we got our first EV.

Pleased with it, 9 months old, 6k miles and came in at 46.5k purchased by the company, was 80k new. No doubt there are other bargains to be had but this ticks all our boxes.

It’s great for local journeys and the pram etc fits in the back ()

It’s quick too. No replacement for a petrol car though. The steering and brakes have an artificial feel and there is not V8 bark etc. Interesting to compare with my F Pace SVR which is way more engaging. Drives pretty well for an EV though and pleased we chose it over a new Ioniq 5. Let’s hope it behaves itself!

Providing your expectations of the car fit your criteria ( ie localish journeys ) and If you must give the EV world a try its probably a goodish choice buying something that 50% of depreciation has already been taken by some other poor unsuspecting buggger who thought they were saving the planet. Hope your experience is a damnn site better than a lot of other EV owners out there who were misled into thinking they were the modern day answer to Net Zero

Over 80% of EV owners have them as company cars as they cost less (in total ownership experience) than their ICE equivalent. Not because they think they are saving the planet. It’s purely a financial decision.

I think the ipace is quite a good looking car. Surprised if it’s viewed by people as ugly, each to their own.

I’m confused why some people are so hostile to an EV. They have their purpose and I will now have more money to put towards other projects.

My friends all commented that I would be the last one to get an EV, as a dyed in the wool petrolhead, but this one is a no brainer for the family car through the company.

Let’s hope it does behave itself though :)

Indeed! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Even the most challenging aesthetics please some people. Do you recall the Fiat Multipla of the 90s?! I think a lot of us are anti EV because of the nonsense and lies that surrounds them from governments and marketing. If they had been introduced as the best solution for towns and cities and a recognition that they are not suitable for everyone's needs then I think there would be less hostility. If the idiots in harge of London were truly serious about air pollution they would have given proper notice that no ICEs would be allowed. Instead, they use it as a tax and effectively say that air pollution is fine if you pay us! Has anyone else noticed that the ULEZ zone in the west just reaches that very clean air zone (LHR!) so to catch the tax for those dropping off or collecting! Blatant! Apart from a billionaire friend who bought one of the 1st Teslas 12 years ago out of intrigue, everyone else I know has done so for purely financial reasons. I like your approach Angus. Save money on the dreary part of motoring to spend more on the fun part!

The car to buy on paper was a Tesla - but that’s just too much like a white good/too conformist for me.

One of the great ironies of the ULEZ is the awful levels of pollution on the Tube - why is more not being done about the shockingly bad air quality there?

Your spot in that most, are upset/annoyed/ disrespectful/aggrieved/ about the legislation and unfair advantage that has been afforded the EV market, especially as we head further down the line in data collection which proves the opposite virtually of what was promised/quoted by certain governments and manufacturers/dealers.
Agreed they have a small market where they will achieve the same if not better results if used locally by people who have access to off street parking and only use their cars for short local journeys ( school runs and local light weight deliveries ) but for anything else one will have to adjust ones lifestyle to accommodate ones usage.....as an all rounder compared to an ice the data shows it doesnt stack up.

My answer to Ewan is, take away the present tax advantages would you make the same choice again .......... In a true free capital market which is what we claim to be EV's would have died a long time ago , except those close and in favour of the Net Zero projects Ev's being just one along side wind farms and solar farms seemed have made an awful lot of money aided by ridiculously extortionate tax concessions which the rest of us and those that disagree in principle have to pay for. Take those tax concessions away and all those business models would fail miserably.

So yes some seem to be hostile against EV's basically because were the ones having to fund those tax concessions which save you money and we feel kind of vilified when the data proves the business model cant stand alone financially .........every tax payer is footing the bill for you saving money on an idea which doesnt and never can make money in its own right

Yup that’s the political agenda. If it were my own money we would have got something else, but when you are choosing between £700 a year tax and £3500-£5k a year company car tax what am I to do.

There is a degree of feeling left out, as a company car user we are quite late to the party. Then there is the tax allowable part against profit.

The government did a U turn on increasing twin cab pickup tax breaks. Its only a twin cab or an EV if you want to pay low ish company car tax, even Hybrids are now not looking good value.

On the flip side as a fleet we resisted EV's for as long as possible simply due to the high purchase price vs a conventional diesel or petrol. Now with over supply and Tesla and Chinese brands dropping their prices, and used EV values plummeting that has been less of an issue.
