last flights of the Vulcan

30 years ago, when I was at RAF Swinderby undergoing Elementary Flying Training there was a 'Blighters' (Airmans) graduation every Wednesday and Operational Units were invited to come and do a fly-past. One day we were waiting on the 'tower' balcony for the guest aircraft to appear. Nothing seemed to happen and then the sky went dark; an 'aluminium overcast' had glided down from about 15000 feet at idle and when he silently arrived in the parade overhead from rear of stage, at about 150-200 feet, he stood it on its tail and gave it the full 'nine yards'. The noise was f*cking incredible! Hats went flying, flag staffs hit the deck, it was chaos. The 'tin triangle' was virtually stationary but nothing below was! He eventually departed, leaving startled families, dishevelled graduates, tinnitus and a feeling it was a day no one would ever forget. I certainly haven't!

That's a "F*cking A" story if ever there was one!

Makes my second last view of the Vulcan flying seem very weak - in the mid 80's the last flight of XL426 which went to Southend flew directly under me, same track, with Waddington asking if I was happy with a 500' separation and confirm visual for them to climb. Oh yes... :) Full climb looked like they went straight up infront of me - couldn't ask for better :)

Have seen XH558 a few times, as they fly near my house when playing near Cottesmore.

I am up for a visit to Doncaster to see the Vulcan. We can try to make some noise too.

While still serving as ground crew in the RAF, one of the old boys used to wax lyrical about working on the Vulcans. At late night drinks, He used to wheel out a reel to reel tape player, and blast us with cockpit chatter and the infamous 60 second launch.

The chap I bought my GranSport Spyder from, who had had it from new, was an ex RAF Vulcan pilot, saw active service in the Falklands.

I'm old enough to have seen them all fly at air shows in the 80s

Lightning , blackbird , Vulcan, starfighter, even Concorde, soon there won't be any epic jets in the air
