You don't need to be old to have seen the 80's shows! I used to go to Finningley Airshow every year when I was about 10 and used to see all those planes flying. Even the Vulcan used to set off every single car alarm when it came on the low flypast.

At lakenheath in 88-89 the Americans were putting a display on with F5s

They did a formation fly past at about 50ft like they used to before rhamstein then a break at the end of the runway

They were suppose to reform ready to come back the other way for a full throttle flyby but as they lined up one was a bit out of position so he gave it a squirt to catch up and hit the sound barrier

There was a loud rumble you could feel in your stomach and every car alarm in the car park went off , I bet he got a rollicking for that

The last year the lightnings were in service with the RAFI went to mildenhall air fete, 87 maybe

As we were leaving they announced the lightings were leaving and would be doing their traditional full afterburner climb to 30,000 feet

I had to get this on video so jumped out of the car leaving my wife moving very slowly in the queue with some friends

I got the whole thing on my new camera , it was spectacular , started walking down the queue, ant to my horror about 200m down it split into 3 different directions, no mobile phones, it took me 2 hours to find them , I must have walked 5 miles round the perimeter fence

Next week we were going to Florida so I transferred the footage to VHS so I could use the tape on holiday

My dad had expressed an interest in seeing the lightnings so I lent him the tape

FF 2 weeks and I go to collect it eager to see the spectacle

Slide the tape into the player to be greeted with a full 3 hours of snooker

Thanks dad

Yep, seeing it at Goodwood now, so I won't be needing to go to this now.

Not sure if everyone knows but there will be not less than 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes taking off from Goodwood Aerodrome on Tuesday 15th September from noon. If you want to see an amazing sight, you will need to book on the Goodwood website. Tickets are free but you need to book. Two viewing points so depending on wind direction, it's a 50/50 chance whether you've made the right choice haha. Can't wait.

The sound of one Merlin makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck let alone 40

Watching a spitfire fly makes me feel very English

I was lucky enough to see two Lancasters last year at work aka Bournemouth Airport. Had a good long look around them, came home stinking of hydraulic fluid.
The noise of four merlin engines in very close formation is great but eight is fantastic.

After only one day on offer, over 10,000 tickets have been snapped up for the Spitfire fly-out from Goodwood on Tuesday 15th of September. As there are only 15,000 on offer, if you want to see it, I suggest you go online and book your tickets asap. Alternatively you could position yourselves on the hill that overlooks Goodwood racecourse - no tickets required.

I can't make it sadly, but I've no doubt it will be an awesome sight and noise. I was lucky enough to see a massed flight of Spits at Duxford a few years ago - half that number and it was stunning. I urge anyone who can get there, to make the effort.

Awesome - thanks for that Phil!

Looking at that display though, I can't imagine the CAA downgrading that for Goodwood - there are no high energy manoeuvres in there to worry about.

True, Some of the rolls would probably have to be toned down a bit but I hope it does a similar display. If not I guess we have witnessed THE final ever Vulcan display.
