The GS/GT ratios of cars available for sale.....has been constant for the last 18 mths.......also the same for Masers for sale on AT....hovers around the 220 mark....all the time....bizarre really.

Yup...the 4200 is more Grand Tourer in handling/soft ride......did they asls revamp the suspension on the facelifted model in 2005...but the brakes also aint up to it in either 4200 or GS!!!

The 4200 is the same weight as a GranSport. The only weight difference among the breed is with the MC Victory, which is 20kg lighter by virtue chiefly of pared down front seats.

It should be no surprise that the 4200 trails in last, it is unfortunately a poor handling car. I have often believed that it would heavily benefit from lowering and, ideally, stiffer springs. Would love to hear from anyone who has lowered their 4200.

Back to Matt's point about withholding GranTurismo stock - the current prices are all about supply and demand. GranSport prices are higher perhaps than you might expect, but that is because there are so few 06 and 07 low mileage examples available on the market. In fact, there are only 20 odd GS's for sale across the country currently. Compare that to 70 odd GranTurismo's, not including the withheld stock. A good, low mileage GS should hold its price for a while to come.

I've lowered my 4200 on the stock springs and handling is much improved.

I assume that in saying that it's no surprise that the 4200 trailed in last you therefore know the conditions were identical for each test?

Miles.....did you have to post that....;)....;)............????!!!!

P

Was just seeking clarification P, and in my brevity I should have clarified to Maser Sod that no offence was intended, but (as if often the case) the devil is in the detail; after-all Top Gear found the Daihatsu Materia to be faster than the Ascari A10.

At this point I should say that I have a vested interest........ Yes....... I'm sorry........ I own a 4200, the slow, poor handling ugly ducking stuck between the teen idol and the university graduate. :D

Is that really crema or is it avorio? Does the interior black/white look a bit harsh to you?
Sorry to ploank this back O/T :)..... I think its avorio, which is about as pale a cream as Maserati do. The dash in black is a must have, IMO - I have a beige dash, and its a nuisance! I'll be changing it before long for a nero one....

As for that particular car, it looks to me to have a pretty low spec. Its not an LE (unusal for a late car) and, from memory, doesnt have park, heated seats....I'm not sure what else it had.

In terms of price, if you have that sort of budget, you should get be able to get a nicer spec. If, however, the spec isnt important, colour combo/mileage on the car certainly look attractive. As Adam has said though, its been around a while, which isnt uncommon fo GSs, but maybe push for a deal if its the car for you.

All just my 2p's worth.

Matt is quite right that you can buy a GT for £40k trade. That is as long as it is a 57 or 08 and has 35/45k miles on it. It may also have a less popular exterior/interior colour combination.

Whether main dealers are sitting on stock and drip feeding it is a matter of debate but you can only get the £40k car if you go to auction (where very few GTs appear) or have access to the trade bidding computer system. For the latter you need a mate in the trade or need to engage a sourcer who will do it for you for a couple of grand but you will have to commit to buying an unwarranted car without seeing it. Pays your money....

It's an interesting debate. Would a Maserati lover rather pay 40-45K for a leggy 4.2 07/57 GranTurismo, or 5-8K less for a pristine low mileage 07/57 GranSport?

No offence intended to the 4200 community earlier, by the way - my main point was that the 4200 to me does not seem inherently to be a bad handling car, it is just not set up as stock to handle well, principally IMHO due to the ride hight. Lowering and other tweaks should get it close to GS handling. Maybe Lewis (Marcos) can comment, he gave his 4200 the full FD treatment. I nearly went down this route myself as I initially wanted a manual Coupe, not a CC.

ps - I notice the other day some GranSport springs lurking in my garage, not sure if these are the same as 4200 springs, but if anyone wants to try them out then PM me!

There's a GranSport on the forcourt at Brentwood Aston Martin today 39,124 miles black well specked, dark red iinteriorV8MYT reg, anyones? They have it up for £25,995 it is almost wrapped in Armourfend on the front and skirts (I'm not a fan of this stuff) so paint should be pretty good underneath, near side rear rim is kerbed but others look reasonable.

Looked on the underside and there is quite a lot of red on parts and not the good type; I'd say it has not been garaged and has gone through the winters on the road.... It does seem a good price and is tempting but I'm not in a position to be tempted just at the moment!

Aeros go for a late car with low mileage and full Maserati service history. As said buy with leather and make sure you have independent inspection. Buying from a main dealer is more expensive but gives you a degree of peace of mind. Main dealers will offer Maserati used car warranty. Pay peanuts and you are sure to end up with a monkey. Get the best you can afford.

The Granturismo is becoming very common in London and has lost its scarcity attraction, becoming more like a 911. 4200's and Gransports are very few and far between and will become even more of a rare sight on our roads.

I own Lewis' 4200 which is now very close to GS spec. I think it's quicker than my Gs's have been and handles just as well if not better. The FD springs and the lowering make a real difference to the handling.

Good info DG.....certainly scope for improvement.......and the "barge" like handling is very noticeable on undulating roads.....
