As for Liz Truss. This will be a puzzler for the Russians. Wondering how she got so far in politics, when the family business is Truss UK plc

The Russian minister who she met said their meeting was something (along the lines of) like "a meeting between someone who was saying something you couldn't hear to someone who didn't want to listen"

So that went well then.

We would never miscontrue a post... ;)

Related to this is a Netflix series called 'Five Came back'. It's about five great Hollywood directors who went to war during WW2 and the films they made, either Training, Newsreel, Documentary or just Propaganda.
The follow up to this series on Netflix are the reference movies. The first is hard to watch which shows the attrocities of the concentrations camps. The second entitleis part of a nother series called 'Why We Fight' and about Russia. It opens up with the various invasions that Russia has sufferred, from the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, the Swedes in the 18th, Napoleon in the 19th and Germany in the First World War. It goes on to say why, simply because Russia has a lot of natural resources, land and people. It's quite strange to watch a film made by America, which did not recognise the Soviet Union until 1940, promote the USSR in such a positive manner. Maybe those in the Pentagon and Whitehall should watch it again and understand Russia's fear of the west.

The link below is the reference film,

Very informative Martin. Thank you.
Must check out Netflix to see if it has a free trial on offer.
Just dispensed with Amazon Prime's free trial. Rarely have I seen a pay-to-view service filled with such dross.

On Russia. We need a lot less lawyers and a few more historians on the Front Bench, who didn't go to
Eton and who aren't bankrolled by daddy's or daddy-in-law's money. Richi-Rich Sunak.
(I'm aware Sunak made millions via his own hedge fund. To my mind that's another disqualifier)

Quite. I imagine the telephone lines between King Charles St and Carlton Terrace were red hot last night ;)

In other news. Putins (alleged) private yacht, left its German berth where it was getting modifications yesterday. Unfinished.
Make of that what you will.

That will be to avoid sanctions relating to personal assets.
I wouldn't make too much of it. That said. I am going to get in some more non perishables, starting next week.
If you've ever read Alas Babylon, or been in uniform. You'll know how farcical events can be, that have the potential to start a nuclear war.
Once started, they're awfully hard to stop.
Exercise Able Archer in 1983 is a perfect example.
You can read details of it here Able Archer What is described, really did happen.
Currently NATO has armoured formations exercising in Germany. Carrier Battle Groups exercising in the Eastern Mediterranean, US hunter killer subs tracking Russian missile subs off the US coasts and our own Astute class subs
engaged in activities that I could speculate on, but won't.

Indeed. Only takes an itchy finger. Who has armoured formations in Germany.
Gone are the days we had 4!

As a gesture of goodwill it is to go on loan to the UK government and will be berthed near Westminster Bridge, with the modifications covered by tarpaulins so as not to worry sightseers. Its owner apparently heard that Westminster folk like a good party, and thought it would be nice to give them one. ;)

A US armoured division arrived by sea in the last week or two, into a large Belgian, Dutch or German port, for a scheduled NATO exercise and to be on hand in case of hostilities involving NATO.
Can't recall which division. 1st Armoured. (corrected. excuse my poor memory)
Interestingly, the current Deputy Commander of 1st Armoured Div. is a Brit.

Yep. From news reports, it sounds like the Americans are completely losing their sh*t in Washington.
You can bet your @ss that they'll have their best satellites trained on the Russian units along the Ukrainian border and know exactly what they're doing. Which may be why they've moved the estimated timeline of invasion up and sound pretty sure of themselves.
Veering into pure speculation. I'm wondering what would happen to supply chains, when major hostilities commence.

I'm trying to be optimistic. Truly. However, when I step back and look at all the moving parts, staying optimistic is becoming increasingly difficult. Assuming nothing kicks off today and tomorrow, I intend to be in Tesco as early as possible on Monday morning, when I hope it's still quiet.

Shush. I’m not in UK but did hint to my wife she may want to stock up on Heinz beans. Much the same as we did before covid. A month before everyone else raided the shops we’d bought an extra bit of something each time just in case.

I did likewise. Immediately after Christmas that year. And then felt like an idiot.
Until the supermarket shelves emptied.

On second thoughts. I may go tonight.
