I agree, for me the E46 was the pinnacle of 3 series exterior design. Really liked mine. I have a G21 now, the grill (Sorry Mark, way too much correct spelling of Grille on this thread) is fugly but a nice place to be on the inside. And not just because you can’t see the outside.

I also agree had a e46 touring followed by the e91 touring.
It was quite noticeable the difference in design, and how they had cheapened it down in materials. I think to save weight too though. The e46 was a bit of a tank.

Yeah, I had an E91 too, it wasn’t as good and solid as the E46 or as reliable.

Chris Bangle was to blame for the change in their design direction years ago to hideous and ugly.
I still have an E46 which I rate as the peak of their designs, both interior and exterior.
Here is mine captured in a favourable light.

Not bad. I had an E36 328i coupe which I thought was the peak design wise but they are all miles better than what BMW rolls out today.

I think BMW did a good job with the E85/86 and E89 Z4 but the new one is too big. It's 3" wider and a the same longer. It's not even German but built in Austria and we all know how bad things get when an Austrian claims Germanic heritage!

i really like the new Z4. Best looking car in the range for me. When ever one goes past me it always cares my eye especially the rear three quarters and rear. Think they have done a good job of making it more interesting and aggressive but never really liked the E89 and not really sure why. Think after the Bangle car it looked a bit safe. Not that it didn’t look OK.

I've had 4 x E46's including one I set up for my son on his return from college baseball in the US.
I won a lot of awards with this one, a 330ci. Sold it with 270,000 kms on it. I had owned it from 60,000 km.

Where as this has far more style than all of them.

The first time I went in a 164 was the first time I went to Rome.
Got in a V6 version which was used as a taxi!

That thing flew! And the taxi driver was lunatic. He explained to me in broken English that in Italy you were less of a man if you gave way to any other man in traffic.
And the only car an Italian should ever drive was an Alfa. Unless you could afford a Maserati or a Ferrari!

I'd never been sideways in a taxi before.

I liked the E93 from day 1 and despite the caning it got by the press (not least the round wheel infotainment) they were bloody good cars. I ran a 525d from 2006 to 2008 and covered over 100,000 miles in it .. after which it still drove and cleaned up like new.

I then had a 535d (real sleeper car) and a 635d - both of which I loved.

I know that BMW is not that popular a brand for many on here but I've had some great sports coupes/saloons from them over the last 25 years. It is just so sad to see them now reduced to making rubbish like this the new '2022 2 series active tourer'. No idea what that means!

If ever a brand needed to a sub brand to focus on the mundane then this is it. I recently thought about ordering an M4 when I was out shopping but the front grill and the downwards brand extension into rubbish like this put me off. BMW is a success but it is not a brand I admire anymore.
