Dear all,

I have a query regarding the change of a reg to a car?

Picture this, a car has a private plate changed on to the car and the original goes to the DVLA.

If and when the car is sold and the private plate moves with the owner does car automatically go back to it's original plate reg?

I have head that sometimes the DVLA may change the original number plate to the car so that you,may not got the original plate number back?

Can anyone confirm this occurring?

Regards

If original plate still available then will normally be reissued, but no guarantee.

As far as I know if the DVLA sell the original plate (and they can if it is not registered) they will give you an age related plate to suit. I had this on a classic mini, the plate was age related and not the original.

When I have put a private reg on my car, it has got the original one back when I have taken the private reg off for selling the car.

Hi Allandwf, many thanks for the reply and it's the no guarantee part that interests me, and to be open I had not realised it was not a definite it would!!!

To be honest most regular plates have no value to sell, if you really want the regular plate to go back on, there is nothing stopping you putting that plate on retention and then putting it back on.

Allandwf is right...99% of the time the original plate goes back on but the odd time when perhaps the DVLA thinks the original plate may be worth something they may sell on.....We've changed around 12 times and every time the original plate has been put back on

The black hole of plate transfers...........
All correct guys.......everyone I have done(and that is probably 1000s now) has gone back to its original plate
the only reason it wont is if the original has been bought by someone, and as already stated most original plates are meaning less

Any idea how long DVLA are taking at present to reissue the V5C after a plate change request. I heard horror stories when system was changed from using local DVLA offices but suspect it has improved now?

When I bought the Spyder, October, it was back on it's original plate about 2 weeks after Matt sent in the transfer paperwork to the DVLA. Surprisingly when the original plate was issues it was marked as non-transferable i.e. I can move it to another car not that I would want to.

I am about to get the plate changed again as it we have just purchased a new plate for it, consecutive to two we already own.

Yes same here just had mine back for the Spyder in under 7 days, so things have improved quite a bit from the beginning of the year.

From sending off the V5C and retention application to receiving all the new docs from Swansea just over a week!
