Oil Pressure Need 5+ and Flickering Oil Temp Needle

I have a problem with my GS Oil pressure dial. It jumps as far as it will go as soon as you turn on the ignition (over 5). I recently had the (correct) oil changed and it is not overfilled. I checked when cold. It looks like a faulty dial but I can't be sure.

Second problem is that the oil temp needle sits around 90 (from memory) but flicks to the right quickly and back again (looks like a fault).

Are these connected problems and is it a sensor change job or worse?

I did a few revs the other day in neutral, nothing amazingly high so I hope this didn't cause it!

Cheers guys!

Maxed out past?

Does it got to 11? :)

Mine goes to 5 but the needle is right round pointing at the 5.

The oil pressure gauges can be flaky and sometimes mine flickers and drops to 2 etc....

Temp seems weird. Should remain at around 90 when idle and drop slightly back when at speed.

Looks like it goes past the 5 a bit but I might be wrong!

Maybe it was flicking back not forwards.... should check again before posting any more!!!!

Failed sender, very common.

The temp dial is water, not oil and should sit below 90 on the run and slightly past 90 in heavy traffic.

Dont worry about it, any questions just ask, we were all Maserati virgins once.

I was wondering the same thing, guess 5 is normal then.

Had my first bit of clutch burning smell incident yesterday. Had to hold the car on a steep incline junction, kept it in 1st and soon started getting a burning smell. Also, the wife left the reading light on overnight and the battery charge shows less than 5 on startup and never more than 10 whilst driving. Is this normal or should I think about charging it up?

Yes, sounds like the culprit - if it's the same as the 3200 component, it's an expensive and fairly hard to find part and liable to fail again but as long as the actual pressure is ok then you'll be fine

I was keeping an eye on mine today. It went to 5 on start up and varied while out. It went as low as 2.5 when slowing down and changing down but then back to 5 when accelerating and stayed mostly at 5 or just below. Temp stayed a smudge under 90. Hope that helps.

5 on startup and underload is as it should be. 2.5 when warmed up on idle (after a few seconds). Says this in the handbook.

Look at page 51.

Temp shouldn't go over 90. When mine was at the Maser dealers a few weeks back, I said mine never got to 90, maxed out at 85 ish. He said probably needs a new thermostat but over 100 degrees is when you should worry at damage can be caused.

And that's exactly as it should be until you start cranking couldn't have put it better Ian.

If you have pressure indicated without the engine running then the sender is faulty.

Bummer. Mine gives 2.5 with the key just turned to light up the dash but then behaves itself after the engine is on giving 5bar on load and dropping bk to 2.5 at idle.
Defo should not do this then? Not just reading residual presure in the system?

There is no residual pressure in the system. Instantaneous pressure is provided by the oil pump when the engine is running so when it isn't, there isn't any. IMO, a faulty sender.

There will be a slight shift in the needle when you turn the key to MAR, as power is being delivered to the sender, however it should just lift off the pin and settle at zero. If yours is lifting off the pin and going to 2.5 you have a clear indication that the sender is dodgy, so a replacement is prudent. Whilst out a quick manual pressure check with tell you what's actually going on. Any decent garage will have the kit.
