Opinions on darker wheels

I'm looking to have my original 3200 wheels refinished in a darker colour. The car is Ferrari Rosso Corsa and I like the idea of the Grigio Mercury... or perhaps even darker??

Anyone have the same combination or have an opinion to share? The cost is relatively minor and hopefully will "update" the whole package a little. The current black calipers are also going to be repainted in Aluminio with red script to contrast with the darker rim.

I'm undecided at the moment and would welcome opinions and other possibilities.

Cheers,

Neil

Do it, do it, do it......I love darker wheels and for me it will realy suit a red car especially if you change the chrome badges to the same colour.....It will def set your car off....

Just had my 4200 wheels done high gloss black metal flake , and they look terriffic, well i think , originally came Grigio touring sliver, then i had them done in Graphite and then completely re stripped and done in high gloss back met and it looks the bees, i know it sounds frivelous but its only a few hundred quid and if you dont like it , just get them re-done , its a days wages thats all

so that's a "not sure" from Andy then.... :)

My feeling is that it will look great but I'm anxious not to "pimp my ride". I'm mindful of the fact that this is a gentleman's grand tourer and whilst the Rosso Corsa does scream look at me, I don't want to cheapen the mystiqe of the Maserati brand.

Since you're on board with the idea... grigio mercury or should I go darker, even black?

Any piccies Loz? I toyed with the idea of a matt/satin finish black as a possible option. There was a car around with the Alfa colour "grigio nube" wheels that did look the biz.

I would love a set of GS wheels but don't really want to go up to a 19" hence the idea of grigio mercury refinish and perhaps 15mm spacers to fill out the arches.

I'm a bit fan of black or grey....Red does lend itself to black.....Do a search for a Gransport in red as they look great on grey...A few out there..It may gove you an idea.....Think grey would look better if you are doing the badges as well...But if you are going black maybe just the wheels.

I would also go for red calipers with a red car and even get the maserati trident on the centre caps painted red also.

I think either Mercury or black would suite your car Neil, however my preference would be black, either gloss, or gloss with a flake, which will make them look like dark mercury when they catch the light. Expect to pay between £70 and £100 per corner depending on where you go and what extra's you want - new dust caps, dispose of old tyres, etc.

I had mine done at the wheel specialists and was happy with their service.

Look forward to pictures when they're done.. :) Regards, Miles.

Oops, just seem where you are :) Probably won't get a wheel Specialists franchise in your neck of the woods! Doh.

Personally myself, I would leave it. I dont like mods to the exterior of any Maserati, prefer the mods to be under the right foot.

I've been quoted AU$115 per wheel including removal/refit and balancing of the wheels from a local refurb specialist. I've had a look at some of the grigio mercury photos and I think maybe it will be the way to go. It's understated enough but yet still looks a bit more sporty than the silver wheels. It's also a factory colour... for whatever that's worth.

I still have Larini on my mind for next year but again, I have a "balls to the wall" track car in the 911 so I really don't want to mess to much with the everyday driveability of the Maserati, it's the whole reason I bought it.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I love my wheels, it made the car look younger and also made it stand out from the crowd, even more than it already did.

Stu, you might get away with it on the 42, but I think it will look odd on the 32, just my thoughts of course.

Hi Stu,

I am going through the same dilemma at the moment as mine need a refurb and I can't decide on dark or original.

Hi Matt,

Your opinion is welcomed. Is it because of the wheel design, ie the number of spokes or because the 3200 is an older car?

I'm hoping to make the car just a little bit more edgy without going down the Lambo all black wheel road. I think the coupe lines will handle a darker wheel but probably not matt black a la Gallardo. The Rosso Corsa is such a bright red that I feel it needs something a little darker to ground the car...if you understand my meaning.

Andrew, I've seen a Ferrari 430 around town in titanio which has metallic black wheels. Looks really good but I think original silver would look better or the black chrome look that's becoming popular.

Neil

I had the same dilemma with my Lotus, after quite some time (a year or so) I decided to got for it.
I don't know if this will help you to decide or not but below are the before and after shots...
