Google Demon Plates, they are very good, but they will only space them legally, so even if you submit a private plate spaced how you want it, they will take your money and then change it to legal. I used them all the time, then fell out with them after they refused to refund my money and they were really nasty about it. They don't make what I have said above obvious to you.

If its legal plates your after, they are fine for that.

If you want a legal plate they are fine, honest. About £25 for the pair plus a few quid for postage. The quality is A1.

did they put some sort of tiny writing on the bottom of yours - either their name or something else and then tell you that this was required by law?

it is not of course.

my plates are comletely plain - ie no logo, no name, no webiste address, etc - just the reg.

is that what you got?

No, I did. They have this plate designer online, you can add different badges, borders and strap lines, totally customisable and you can chose your own strapline, or just not have one. You can go as plain or mad as you like. Why they p!ssed me off is because you build your plate, then you submit and pay for it, and it came back spaced differently. All they said is that I agreed to it in the Terms and Condition....yeah, some 5 point bit of text buried at the bottom.

They, like all the rest, now have to produce only legal plates or be shut down, so are catching people out.

Best put the GB badge on it, then you dont have to have an ugly GB oval sticker on your car when you go abroad.

Have a go:

I've looked at them - and there is some bit in there about the stupid 2.5mm writing on the bottom.

i dont want that - mine are plain now - and this in my view looks best.

All I want is the same but entirely black lettering - mine have a tinge of grey in there which I am trying to get rid of.

you have to put a GB oval sticker on your car if you go to Europe - all countries - I didnt know that - is there some site where all the europe rules can be found?

This is what they say:

18. Will the number plates show the makers details and the legal markings 'BSAU145d'?

Yes our plates will show these markings because this is what the UK law requires for plates which are used in the UK. People seem to think that we put these markings on the number plates because it gives us free advertising. This is most certainly not the case. We put these markings on there because it is required by law and your car could very well fail an MOT without these markings. The markings are only approximately 2.5mm high and although they can be read, they are really small and do not interfere with the plates design. The markings have to be on plates made by companies within the UK for plates used within the UK to assist the police in the reduction of car cloning. If a set of our number plates are used in crime then the police know who made them and they will come to us to ask who they were sold to.

ooh, thats new to, in that case dont bother. If you go into your local used car sales garage, they will make you some up for cash, no questions asked if you know what I mean. That way, you can see what you get before you pay for it.

Sounds like Demon Plates are doing their usual and hiding stuff.

I know Blackbush market has a guy that does plates, no questions asked.

I've always used Craigs Plates in the past and found them helpful and know what plates will fit which car. The quality has always been first class and as long as you say they are show plates they are willing to add your own wording or logos on the bottom of the plates.

http://www.craigsplates.com/

They also do black and silver plates and they made all the plates I use on the Bora. They can also do custom sized plates ie Itialian sized front number plate.

Cheers for that Robin. Great site, my conundrum is getting the right balance between straight legal and a slight variation so I don't get stopped/fined/made to pay punitive tax for the next 10 years or whatever. Yes, I know if I want to avoid trouble get normal plates

So what I'm looking at is an extra space after the first 2 letters: XX 99 MAZ (XX and 99 of course being something else!)

Maybe the font being the 3d variety.

Any experience of getting stopped / fined for non-compliant plates? Thoughts on whether the above is likely to be subtle enough to get away without any hassle? I do see some real abuses of the lettering on some cars which is far worse than I'm thinking.

Thanks
Adam

Hi Adam,

Whenever I have had queries I have called them and spoken to Craig in person about what is legal/acceptable and he has always been very helpful, though of course he does have to give the usual caveat to protect himself if you do choose to run illegal plates and do get stopped. They can also make rear plates in odd shapes to fit shaped number plate recesses like the Aston Vanquish etc.,.. I am sure you know what I mean.

Mostly I run my plates in legal form anyway, the plate on the Bora doesn't really need messing with for example! On my Subaru which has a 5 digit plate which on the front of the car is shortened to suit (legal thing to do), the font and size are legal there is just a missing space ie it is S9EKD rather than S9 EKD and I have never had a problem despite it being on an all bells and whistles STi (no gold wheels though ;) ). If I wanted to take a chance I would have run it as S9EK D but chose not too as I always felt that would be asking for trouble.

I also attach the plates with velcro and have fully legal plates in the car so they can be swapped at a moments notice if there ever is a problem.

Personally I would keep it legal or close to legal as I just don't want the hassle.

Regards,

Robin

I like the velcro idea. I'll avoid the temptation to go too crazy with the honeycombe background, Maserati images etc!

you'll love this.

ordered plates from craig plates.

got message saying they have been dispatched.

a week goes by - nothing - I contact them - nothing from them.

and we now discover that the muppets at fed ex delivered somewhere else - got someone elses signature - nothing to do with that person.

and no sign of them - nothing.

and nothing from fed ex - still no sign of them - they are trying to trace them.

unbelievable.

That is bad. Oh well, at least they are only plates and you will get a replacement or refund.
