Hi,

Can anyone confirm which 50amp relay in the boot is for the F1 Pump?
I have two identical relays one above the other.

Cheers

Not sure Dave, but how about pulling one at a time to see which one causes the gearchange to stop working? You should be (not) able to hear the pump when you unlock and open the driver's door, no?

Tried that, the two relays are identical,
The control circuit must be series wired, the pump dosnt prime with each one independently... Removed..
May just get two, they are identical, need a wiring diagram or exploded drawing.,

That's interesting - I'll look at mine tomorrow and see what's fitted there. I've been thinking about changing the relay as preventative maintenance, but hadn't realised there might be two! I wonder if that's a reaction to the issue with relays failing closed with welded contacts - having another relay in series would generally allow the circuit to be broken and protect the pump. Would be even more useful if there were auxiliary contacts to indicate that the relay hadn't opened...

Checked mine today Dave - exactly the same as your car. There are two relays apparently wired in series.

The manual says that position 22 (the upper one) should be empty, and position 23 is the pump.

Why would you change a relay for preventative maintenance? Relays either work or they don't, they don't sort of wear out from use. I have original relays in one of my cars from 1969, and they still work fine.

Well known problem in this application - the contacts weld closed, leaving the pump running constantly. That then fails, and is considerably more expensive and trickier to replace than a cheap £8 relay.

You are right - most relays effectively work forever, but not if they are running close to their contact rating with a nasty arc-producing load.

A relay is effectively a switch which as with any moving part is susceptible to wear, the contact faces do wear.. If it fails the car cannot be moved.. £8 is a good investment to guard against a breakdown.

Could anyone provide a picture of the exact location of these relays for a 2005 QP?

Apologies for bringing back an old thread, but was the relay question ever confirmed?
I got the relevant part today (purely as a preventative measure) and again have these 2 relays, although my manual seems to be a little different to whats described in this thread.

The manual states,

R22 (upper relay) is the F1 pump on mine
R23 (lower relay) is Rear Connected devices (controlled by NVB) - No idea what that is................Anyone? :)

Only wanting to check as drewf's post states "The manual says that position 22 (the upper one) should be empty, and position 23 is the pump." which doesn't relate to mine for some reason, no point in me changing over the wrong relay.

Interesting - what year is your car?

Easy way to check: pull a relay and open the driver's door. If you can't hear the pump prime, then that's a relay controlling the pump. Repeat for the other relay in that area - personally, I'd view the words in the manual with a pinch of salt. Double check by putting the relays back one at a time and listening again for the pump priming when you open the door.

Magic, thank you!

No problem at all. looks like there is quite a few nuggets of information in that document. I'm not sure it was meant to be released into the wild. some interesting documents in the right hand pane of the page as well.
