Hi,

Thanks the indecisive female members of my family we cannot go to Ludlow as now all the hotels are booked for the first weekend in November, or the remaining rooms are out of budget.

I am now on the hunt for somewhere else to go. It's for my Dad's birthday. Would be grateful for your thoughts.

The rough requirements for town are:
- no more than a 3 hour drive from North London;
- a few things of historical note to see (churches, cathedrals, museums, etc)
- of a decent size to potter around in for two days and not get bored!
- an old market town would be nice
- picturesque
- nice pubs
- nice restaurants

Not: Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Marlow, Chichester, Brighton, Poole, Bournemouth

Really hoping you guys can help!

Thanks
R

Ummm ... Warwick?

Historical note: Castle, Lord Leycester Hospital, Stratford just 6 miles away, Kenilworth Castle 3 miles away
Lots of good Gastropub pubs, restaurants and bars in WALKING distance
Very good B&B's - Park Cottage especially
Rose & Crown Gastropub pub just opened extra rooms on Market Square around the corner from the pub.
On the Avon
Leamington Spa 2 miles away if you MUST go shopping
Heritage Motor Museum 6 miles away at Gaydon

Not trying to blow our local trumpet or anything but a seriously good break ....

And you can talk Maserati if you pop in for a drink or some tapas!

Won't Warwick be swimming with students though?

I wonder the same about York.

Barry Island, Scunthorpe, Blackpool :D

North Wales, Snowdonia, Bala, Betws-y-Coed and a Maserati; you dont need anything else.

Does the centre of town have enough to keep people occupied for 2/3 days? With enough things to see and do? Also, how pretty is the centre of town?

Keep in mind that in November it could easily be snowing!

I'd say Norwich and points there, the coast (Cromer, Lowestoft etc)
If you could do 3.5 hours, York or Harrogate would by my fave though. I know some great restaurants in that neck of the woods :)

Norwich? It's a three day camel ride from here. Even the third world (York, Harrogate) is much nearer for me.

The nice thing about Norwich is that you can leave Liverpool Street station at 5pm on a Friday and arrive in Norwich in 1952.

It's for Novermber C, so the coast is not very appealing.

I think the shortlist is:
- Chester
- Lincoln
- Warwick

It's like Bulgaria. Set your watch forward 2 hours, and your calendar back 20 years.
