Should I try to buy a 4200

Hi All,

It's been a while since I've been on here, the house sale/purchase has now fianlly gone through and unfortunately the Masser budget has been largely swallowed by extensive house renovation costs ... I know.

I had previously had a budget of £20k and was looking for 2004/2005 facelift 4200's with 30-38,000 miles on the clock. However, I had started questioning the economics of buying a low mileage car. I realised that as soon as I hit 40,000+ miles I knock a fair amount off the value, I expect from £~20k down to £15-17k. So I pay a premium for the low mileage and then by driving it I devalue it. I therefore came to the conculsion that I should start looking at higher mileage cars.

Please disagree with me if you think i am wrong.

The other issue is the year. Having done all the reading to look to buy a 2004/2005 facelift car, I really would want a car which had the 2003 mechanical upgrades (CC gearbox, MSP, skyhook etc). Thanks all,
R

Not going to go down the 3200/4200 debate but that one looks very nice except the red exuaust tips a bit Max Power for my likeing.

Oh yes had not spotted the red inserts in the exhaust, nasty. New set of straight through pipes for £600 would sort that out.

Great shout Lee, that's a very cheap car, it would be unlikely that it would pass a PPI but if it did, proper bargain!

Hi Dicky - PPI? Did you mean HPI?

Lee - seems like possible a good car.

Phil - Thanks - 90k! But then if all the work has been done to maintain it, it would appear that its a good buy.

Pre Purchase Inspection?

Sounds simple but could you not hold off for a while and get a more sorted car in the next 12 months? you could end up spending money on a 2003 car that you could have put towards a later car?

Could also work the other way i suppose - a later car might have problems that you could end up spending money on.

I'd personally wait and save a bit more - but you might end up like me, starting off with 4200 idea, think about waiting some more (and save more money) and now I'm thinking next year and a QP..

10K for 4200......?!...must be either buying lots of trouble or a distress sale...................either way fork out your £200/250 for indie inspection.........must have a decent service history and sheaf of invoices.....

Thanks Parisien. I'd still apply the same requirements to a purchase - mainly caution, looking for a full specialist dervice history and getting a decent independant check. But, you are probably right that for that money it won't happen.

Good man.......always another one around the corner....and if its for you....its for you...if not.....walk and keep the wallet closed, as always, in lots of aspects of life....the hunt or chase is better than the buy or kill!!!!!!

Thanks Parisien.

Cheers Andy. I think the Blue interior is the reason for the lower price. That's not really the colour for me, so I may need to wait or find more cash.

Mind you the other car for £11k plus or minus 500.......with 1/2 the miles is a way better buy if all stacks up, plus can keep it longer or option to sell on in a year with sub 50K miles and get your money back

If the eBay sub 50000 mile car has no faults and passes an inspection, take it, absolute bargain. My thought is that if it is likely to pass an inspection, has a good history and is hpi clear, it's worth £13-14k. Problem is, if you have it inspected and it needs £2000+ spending on it, he's not going to let you have it for £8-9k. You never know so arrange an inspection and have a crack at it....

We'll see about that car, not sure.

Might widen the search and raise the price threshold a bit

Whenever you're looking Ross, the right car always crops up within a few weeks. There are decent 4200's to be had for £10k, but few and far between.

I hope that rings true in a few months time Dicky. I'll keep my fingers well and truly crossed. Thanks.
