Yeah, this is a topic that applies not just to EVs. Cars 20/30 years ago had nothing like the weight of cars now. Tech, safety, consumer choices (SU-fecking-what?) , have all pushed the weight from sub-1 ton to close on or beyond 2, even for 'normal' ICE cars.

That car parks, designed to for Cortina-sized cars that weighed half the weight of cars now, are now struggling to cope is hardly a surprise.
Spot on the money those guys , and to the younger generation we are the fuddy duddy ones fecking up the planet for chrisake ............work that one out , then we pay very costly educated scientists hefty salaries on long term contracts with the latest kitted out science labs to come up with reasons to support the flawed crazy ideas that Al Gore and a few other well heeled connected crazy's of the WEF to brainwash people with reverse psychology that its all a good idea ...go figure ......why cant they just be up front and admit were tory rich kids creating jobs and money for the boys ...........that would be a lot more honest and stop the majority of the 50 plus generation thinking they are paranoid and getting the maths wrong somewhere along the line :as001 (2):

Today I was reading that EVs may be too heavy for current roads and multi story car parks.

I would like to think that in the same way ICE car owners have to pay a premium for emissions etc, EV owners will be paying extra to maintain our roads and reduced car parking spaces……….

Mmmmm ………. but somehow I doubt it !
Maintain roads......crazy idea. It'll never catch on

More people should buy an Alpine. Just about the best drivers car available for vaguely sensible money, and only 1100kg.
I‘m amazed only about 200 a year sell in the U.K.
It just goes to show how few people care about their actual driving experience. (Lots say they do, but yet they still buy an Audi, etc.)

Fully agree for the enthusiasts. Why would you buy any of the two tonne M/AMG/S series cars as your sporting choice. However, if you need to take children and/or luggage then it means going back to - pre 991 911s, 32/4200s, etc. for compact and lighter weight options. I fear that if Alpine made a competitor to the M3/C63/RS4 at 1250kg it would still only sell in low numbers as it is a left field brand and brand is what most youngsters (especially in places like China) care about - just look at the size of the labels on their clothes! That is why marketing have so much say in car design and look where that has taken us (Marcello is already turning in his grave!).

Alpines are not even sold here in Ireland, you can get one from NI but VRT would be a nightmare as the revenue would be able to just make up a number

I’d love one, but £70k is a crazy price in my opinion, as are most new cars. The fact they’re 0% finance clearly demonstrates they are struggling to sell in the numbers they’d wish to be attaining.

I can see an Alpine being a final fling for myself here in France would suit us two nicely :)
Thats the same exact dilemma im in now Phil , looking for that final fling as to reignite my fire , Masser will get the attention its become accustom to and after 20 years its embedded in my DNA , but I need a renewed passion ........Bentley is a wonderful waft but too over engineered to give worry free ownership , My head says put two fingers up to the tax man and look for something concours pre 1984 to beat the Road tax Mot and Ulez ( not that Ulez affects me that often .........but thats where Im at and still undecided where to go ..........Mk2 Jag ............Jensen interceptor , im not in the price bracket for 3500gt My original thoughts were Audi R8 or a GTR as a dalliance , but then i would be in the same position im in now

Agree, especially when you consider that buys a perfect Strad but the Alpine is different again and unless you can squeeze into an Exige, a unique experience. The good news is strong residuals. A new one cost just over 50k 7 years ago and they are still worth north of 30k. By modern car standards (let alone EVs) that is pretty good. I imagine light weight will mean light on tyres and 35-40mpg helps too. Where else would we go for that budget (not the 70k but the TCO - total cost of ownership over 5 years/30k miles)?

Probably a Cayman GT4.

I was watching a senator question some high-flyers in transportation in the US about climate change and their aims and ambitions for the organisations they represented . About a dozen from memory.
Asked what percentage of the atmosphere they thought was CO2, the answers varied from @7% to 17%…!
When the senator revealed the real number to be 0.04%, not one of them had the presence of mind to even blink..!
Stupefying how uninformed the proponents of the political science are. Instead, they all doubled down, reiterating their commitment to rid their states of jobs and a black ledger in favor of saving us from ourselves…!?!
