Evening all you elastictrickery experts

My new gym has three phase power. How do I / can it be converted to normal sockets?

TIA

Any 2 legs for 220v, any 1 leg + neutral for 110v. I believe your system is the same as ours.

From somewhere in the deep reaches of my mind,
415v can give you 2 outputs, so taking a supply from one phase and neutral will give you 239v.
415/ root 3 is 239.
I can see it and I can draw it but by f#£k I can’t explain it very well.......so,so long ago.
Obviously the neutral comes from the centre of the star..

Edit....see Zep’s here so I’m about to be debunked.....lol..

Just looking on Google images, there is no star, but rather a circle.

I should take a photo of the socket that's actually installed.

There is a distribution board. I shall check that as well.

Cheers

Check the ratings. If it can operate with 220v 3 phase you could use an inverter to go from 220v single to 220v 3 phase. If not you can get a rotary converter but it will be £££.

The other option is to change the motors for single phase jobbies.

'Motors'?

It's a gym (I'm aware of the deep irony that everyone wants 3 phase in their workshops and I have it somewhere I don't need it)

You are right, but 3 phase motors get really upset running with single phase at anything other than a very light load.

So you are going to be generating 3 phase? Got a spec sheet?

I hadn't thought of that

So by gym, I mean for kung fu. No running machines etc. I suddenly realised this might be causing some confusion...

But he hasn’t got motors to power...just a supply I guess..in which case Chris needs it converting at the main supply.

Sorry, don't listen to me

To be fair, until I worked for a US company converting equipment to operate in the EU it was unclear to me what the differences were. They are quite fundamental, for example US 220v (for laundry machines and AC units I understand) is generated my using a transformer with a central neutral pole, effectively two phase with a 180 degree phase angle. Really perplexing for those of us on this side of the pond.

:p

I’m not sure that has made it any clearer! :p

I need normal 240v sockets to run things like heaters (although there are some neat 400v jobs) and music, extra lights etc.

What I have is a 400v, three phase socket.

I don't want to power any motors at all. You're the one that started with the motors! ;)

Frankly it’s all a bit baffling, if there are no motors just electronics, these will generally work on one of the three phases. Which then kind of begs the question as to why the two other phases are there. I am waiting with baited breath!

I dunno why they're there! It probably seemed like a good idea at the time!
