I've always felt that the P5 was a cool car for its time.

Only the coupe version that a factory roof chop and a V8 (even if in original form it was a bit asmathic)
I owned 2 - 3.5L V8 SD1, had hydro spastic suspension that would jack the car up on one side without warning, then a 1993 820 turbo - brilliant engine but it leaked oil from the day I bought it, 2 head gaskets, water pump, exhaust, alternator and a whole host of repairs later it caught light and the bloody Fire Brigade put it out! The next time it caught fire the Mrs was driving I was away, told her to let it burn! cost me more in repairs than the purchase cost

s***e cars

Very cool car , has to be, my Dad had one after his Rover 95, considered to be the working mans rolls royce in its day when the quality was still there, even i had a rover P 2000 manual , great fun and brought back memories , the only daunting bit as i remember and was particular to both the 95 and the 3.5 coupe was the whine in first gear , even from new , other than that many fond memories

Only ever scrapped Leyland / Rovers that were passed to me (I'd never have bought one) except an old K reg MGB-GT that I bought as scrap and practiced restoration on whilst doing a coledge course, then sold it on to another restorer on the course when I left... Never had any intention of driving it though.

Drove a Marina once and after 200 yards the gear stick came off in my hand! Leyland got their just deserts, adopting the Rover name was a last hurrar....

Thank god the days of the likes of Red Robbo/Scargill are well and truly over , unless imports restrictions had/are been put in place as state protection that work etheic would never work in a free market , His ethos and beliefs were what truly killed off British leyland , and most UK car makers , that ethos and free market dont go hand in hand and never will ,

The Rover engine 3.5 V8 (they bought it from the americans forgotten which firm) is at the heart of many cool cars, bored out to 4.5 lt plus its a beast! I had an limited edition fastback 3.5 SD1 when I was 18 which I thought was great. It fell apart after a while but the engine was fine.

Ultimately the British car building industry failed due to poor management, failure to endlessly update and improve quality control............the unions were just the icing on the cake.

I believe the engine was a Buick small block... I will conceed this was a great engine as it developed and was put into some fabulous motors.

I helped my brother to put one into his Bedford CFII tipper truck; somewhat breathed on it required so much of the cab floor to be cut out that it had to be an auto box, new engine cover was modeled from half of an acrylic bath covered in wadding and vinyl... Cherry bombs up the back of the cab with flaps on the tops it would often be seen with one front wheel in the air and occasionally the second would join it!!! Soo much torque and wicked power.

It got through three gearboxes in the first year as it would crack the bell housings off them!!!

No idea what the top speed was as the spedo only went to 110... From the outside other than the cherry bombs and the fat wheels it looked standard with an unusual rumble.

Had to get an independent auto engineers report for the insurance & MOT following conversion and the only comment he put on the report was 'Exceptionally neat and well made alteration'.

A hooker pipe per chance? I could see how that'd make a Rover look almost apealing...

Blackburn, Bristol or Hull Kingstone?????????

Ohhh the cars....had a Rover Montego on test when I was in the Police...hit a pot hole and the engine fell out at 80mph...now that was a lot of paperwork...but I did like my Rover 800 Vitesse hatch back but not as much as my Capri 2.8
