well known fact in certain circles that it's an abuse of these variable speed limits by the highways agency and to simply catch drivers out with the close proximity of different speed limits and relying on some motorists not reacting quick enough

Do the speed awareness course. I've just done one. Insurance wise you only tell your insurance company if they specifically ask. Technically you aren't being prosecuted if you do the course, the police drop the charge on condition the course is completed.
You can also do them near to where you live (usually)

Haven’t read all the comments but I just been on a speed awareness course and I questioned a resent advent I didn’t get caught in big totally ****** me off .

I was driving back from stansted airport to Reading on the m25 at 12.00 Mid night on a bank holiday passed though one off these so called smart motorways, speed reduced to 60 than 50 ! I saw about 5 cars ! no road works no broken down cars no immigrants no rubish in the road absolutely nothing !!!! I asked the question why reduced the limit if only to catch out the motorist and the answer was ......,. There reduce the limit at night because of poliution , that’s right pollution !!! So you have no chance of contesting these things ! There pretty much can use any old excuse theiy want . Or another one was noise levels for locals !!!you couldn’t make it up !!

Wow.....now there are some numbers.

I think we all know it is now another stealth tax or revenue generator. Why don't they just be upfront & honest about it.

Why not just generate fines with no penalty points or speed awareness courses. Just simply fine people & keep hitting them in the pocket.

They need to rename the speed awareness course to something more applicable.

I would love to see some stats that show that these complex and variable dynamic speed situations are actually causing more accidents than they are preventing. It really wouldn't surprise me. It can't be healthy or safe or good for flow to have so many changes in speed. Just the guy coming past me & jumping on his brakes from maybe 80 or 90 down to 50 in a very short distance is dangerous IMHO.

I fear getting one of these and feel your pain. I was on the M25 yesterday and have no idea what the speeds were as they changed from 70 to 60 to 40 to 70 and people were avergaing around 80mph through all zones. It's madness they can just drop the speed limit for absolutely no reason. I saw 40 yesterday and honestly there was only one car on the road in front of me. Don't get me started on the M6 right now from Charnock Richard all the way down to Toll Road is pretty much Average speed SPECS cameras in roadworks. It's a joke!!!!!!

One thing they told us at the course. Less than 10% of road deaths are on motorways so yes a proven money earner rather than targeting accident spots

Some insurance companies ask if you've been on an awareness course but they cannot charge you anymore if yiu have been on one. Admiral ask but I did an awareness course this week and they told me it is illegal to charge you anymore if you have carried one out.

On the point of the incident I think you'll just have to pay up and take the points or course, I know things can get confusing but it's the same for all of us.

On the point of the middle lane driving I'm afraid there is NO excuse for that no matter what is on the inside/outisde lane. If you dont feel confident driving on the inside lane then pull away from the cones a little and straddle the white line a little but middle lane hoggers boil my urine. I cannot believe how bad the UK drivers have got at motorway driving. If you sit back and look at how our motorways work then the norm now is for the inside lane to be reasonably free of traffic thses days and the overtaking lane jammed full of traffic that is trying to get past the middle lane hoggers. End of rant.

Agreed, it is very confusing to know what speed you are supposed to be doing. From my perspective there is not a desire to speed on these sections of road or disobey the rules or regs of the road. Just compelete confusion on what speed your supposed to be doing. That isn't fair or objective just complete dishonest trickery.

Mind you why should I be surprised it seems to be the way of the world these days. Who says crime doesn't pay. What is being done here is nothing short of extortion and criminal.

Funny that the people indirectly are supposed to be running the country but all that is being done here is against the majorities thoughts it seems.

Good to know about no increase in premiums due to disclosing SAC to insurance company.

I agree about middle lane hoggers 100% & it annoys the heck out of me too. In my defence I had consciously made this decision as some of the cones were so badly & randomly placed on some points on the inside lane there were actually in the lane.

Technically it's nothing short of fraud by the Highways Agency :road_rage-28:

Not variable speed limit-related but I felt a fule this week and waiting to see if a NIP is coming. Starting down a dual carriageway on a hill with a 30 limit just before dusk oncoming cars were flashing me. I was in my wife's Golf which I rarely drive. It has automatic lights-on and I wondered if somehow I was on high beam, peering at the dash and the light switch to see what was wrong but of course peeps were warning me about a camera van. The irony is that the vans are often there and I am always careful to stick to the limit but might have been over by a few MPH (which should be OK) because I was distracted by the flashing! Not that that would be any defence as it would be failing to pay due care and attention. The other local issue is that the police are now enforcing the 20mph limits using motorbike-portable cameras in sneaky places. If you do obey the 20 you get tailgated, flashed and overtaken - which is when you would dearly love there to be a camera just beyond. Strangely I only get hassled when I am in the UP! but not when I am doing 20 in the GS.

Not sure these should be called 'SMART' motorways really as they ain't very bl00dy clever.

However when you stop & think it is a perfect phrase. They are very smart....much smarter than me that's for sure! Sneaky or sly motorways might be a little more accurate though

Maybe it is a back room known acronym that we aren't partial to.

Sneaky
Motorway
Always
Rinsing
Tw4ts

Anyone come up with a good/better acronym for SMART?

The ,we can't tax you so we'll fine you instead course.

Everything is about money , concerns about the environment but you can still buy a 500bhp V8 that does 10mpg as long as you pay , you can drive in congestion zones in any car regardless of emissions as long as you pay.

Anyone who thinks electric cars will be cheap to run forever is deluded , once they get the battery technology right and they start replacing conventional engines the running costs will go up , average car £5 A week in road tax £40 fuel of which at least £30 is tax so approx £1600 PA to the treasury which has to come from somewhere

The speeding fines will start at 50.001 mph

It's a racket, legalised robbery, buy diesel they said a few years back and who is paying now? Don't trust the shower of sh1te now, not ever. I think the Country needs another Oliver Cromwell.
