IT's all very well talking dow the value of one when you are in the market for one but surely once you own one it's the opposite. GS due to their rarity will become a future classic probably more so than the 3200 or 4200 because they took the classic shape and ironed out all of the issues and that simply made a better car. Even Octane said the one to buy is the GranSport.

Not talking it down, merely stating that the prices have gone high of late and the market is stagnated. I accept that the GS is and will always be worth a certain price, its just gone mad due to a few unrealistic dealers at present.

£25k should get you a descent enough GS but the current offerings are just not there.

Now I am totally confused, it seems that GS prices are similar to 4.2 GT prices give or take. Is the GS a better car than a 4.2 GT?

I would say thats a fairly accurate assumption. For me, the GS does not really compare to the 4.2GT, it compares more with the 4.7 GTS in my book.

Market price is basically what people will pay. I've priced my last two GranSports slightly 'high' - as compared to the market at large - as I haven't been in any rush to sell them, and I know that because there are so few on the market, somebody will pay a little bit more to get what they want, particularly if it is in good nick and of low mileage.

You also have different categories of buyer in the Maserati market. Some people have budgets to work within, whilst others are flush and just buy the car because they fancy it at that given moment in time. As an example, I think we had a Maserati buyer on here recently who had his car for a couple of weeks or so and was selling it up for a 5K loss because it didn't work for them as an 'around town' car. I couldn't afford that kind of hit, but some people clearly can.

I have also seen a private seller take around 5K less for their car from an indie than I was going to pay because the indie saw it a couple of days before I did. Go figure.

The market fell a long way over the last 4 years but now the economy is picking up quite quickly toys come roaring back up the priorities list and demand drives price.

Agree Matt....if everyone were pricing the GS at 29/30k plus then we can not really say anything but thats not the case........but when a 60k mile car is up for 18k there is no way on earth that a car with half the miles of that car is worth 15k more....well sorted or not.....Thats the price of 4200........Matt, I'm with you on this one all the way.......Hang in there as you will get the car you want....just not from the dealers you have been looking at....

^ Andy, as I've already said, it's not what it is worth, it is what people are prepared to pay! There are simply not many GranSports around, particularly low mileage ones. I've sold two lowish mileage GranSports for well over 30K. I had plenty of cheeky (in fact insulting) offers but I didn't have to wait much more than 3-4 weeks to get the price I wanted.

Also, keep in mind that there is 'networking' going on behind the scenes. So often a GranSport will change hands even before the advert has made the internet. I know this from personal experience, on both sides of the deal: I've benefitted once and been royally screwed more than once!

I'm relatively new to these cars as you all know so wouldn't profess to be an expert, but speaking as a recent GS buyer I think the thing that no one has considered is that comparatively few people know much about the marque, fewer people these days want big engine cars and many probably see a 6-8 year old Maserati as a financial risk. What's more, the shape is starting to look old in comparison to cars like the Aston V8 Vantage or 997, so many of those with £30k to spend on a car of this ilk will be put off a GS by the aesthetics.

Therefore it's a niche product, appreciated by those who know about them or who can be tempted to drive one, but the market for these cars will be getting smaller as each year goes by, each time fuel prices and insurance bills go up and each time car design moves on.

Sellers who can afford to hold out for long enough might get the price they want from a fellow enthusiast, but there are several examples around of these cars priced at sub £22k and still not selling. The one I bought is stunning and to my eyes compares with some of the cars priced at £28k+ yet I paid £21k.

We seem to have a fixed mental picture as to what these cars are worth and anything which bucks the trend always seems to stir debate. IMO, the big picture is that these cars are very much undervalued. A 3200, 4200 or GS is an exotic Supercar and should be valued as such. They have thoroughbred engineering and are made by a famous company whose star is in the ascendency. We should embrace the perceived increase in value and encourage it because, when used correctly, they can certainly run with the big boys. I wouldn't swap mine for a 360 spyder and those things are going from £40k and upwards and take it from me, they aren't anywhere near twice as good or as rare as mine.

True! Maybe that's what's driving the price hike - owners trying to recoup their costs hehe.

I'd actually expected some real abuse after my post, so I think I've come off lightly!

I think prices are following other exotica asking prices. I always wanted a 348, but were out of reach at around £20-25K when I bought the 3200. Now asking prices are £25 to £30K.

shall I ask for 25k for my AC?
GS prices are going up, you could have bought a GS 2 years ago for these prices...good news for you all

Dem

My previous offer of £2.5k still stands (cash of course)!

You must understand that no one wants dirty black cars with bent tail lights these days. Now, if it was a 4200......

Lol - you must know me, I rewrote that post three times, even after I read your most recent threads, my (cheap) car's window is busted, my (cheap) car's engine runs at 1000 bar oil pressure etc.

I think I did really well not explaining the difference between a well sorted looked after example, priced correctly and a 'cheap' car.

I did well I think?
