Thanks TridentTested,
Yes, I know of Bill McGraths and did speak to them. They still don't have the SD3 diagnostic equipment as yet though. For this job, if you're going to change the F1 pump I understand there is a need to bleed the system (checking fluids etc) and I think it probably wise to have the SD3 perform a test on the system after the F1 pump install and fluid check. Don't quote me on this as I am no expert but I understand that one of the checks/tests the SD3 can perform is to recalibrate/refamiliarise (don't know the technical term!) the gears for the electronic clutch on your semi-automatic gearbox (named Duo-Select in my case - my car is a 2004 QP) after installation of a new F1 pump and fluid bleed /check.
Anyway, QUICK UPDATE ON MY ISSUE: I had an indie in London fit the Alpha Selespeed pump as quoted in Loz's original post at the top of this thread (part number 51736315) to my 2004 QP. The indie also checked fluids and bled the system followed by a diagnostic check on their SD3. Of course the relay was changed too. I had never used this indie before so I watched them do it personally (for my own sanity you understand!). All in it cost about £650.
Have driven the car about 40 miles so far with the new pump and all seems well - the car is performing normally so, touch wood, the job was a good un (I will of course post again if I encounter any problems). For ref: the F1 pump on the early QP5's with Duo-Select is located just to the left of the gearbox at the rear of the car just before the lower part of the boot (not above the gearbox as I had originally feared (so you can get to it and replace without dropping the gearbox - just about - it was very tight in there!).
Many thanks to Loz for his original post (what a star!) and the follow ups from Enz, Parisien, etc.
I did take some pics. I will post if I can work out how to insert images on this forum. Give me a minute...
Cheers, Dhanj
ps - Further Update July 2012 - Driven car over a thousand miles now and F1 pump is still working fine so I think we can safely say the Alfa Selespeed pump works just fine on an early QP5 DuoSelect
