Fuel protests

Frankly, I'm amazed there aren't more protests. Garages and super markets are operating a cartel, govt doing FA, fuel prices are feeding inflation.

They must have run out of ideas at the protest planning meeting!
Police expect disruption at:
Severn Bridge
M5/M4
Tesco in Shepton Mallet

The treasury coffers are topping up nicely so there's not much incentive for the government to intervene on pricing, and as many key ministers are millionaires they're not overly fussed about inflation either. Protests will have little effect on pump prices, if any.

Although not due to the cost of fuel, I understand there are concerns there may be protest at the Silverstone F1 event this month.

When Tesco are more expensive than Shell then you know it must be rigged.
The Shell at Gatwick is renowned for higher prices ( hire car returns and location) 189.9p
Tesco's Gatwick Extra 193.9.

Yes am aware which is why I am working from home Monday as I will not get across the Severn Bridges from 7 to 7 by the looks of things…So let’s face it no hardship for me. If they want to do this every Monday then I’m fine with that.

I do think that it will make no difference and they are blocking the wrong people. They should be blocking the fuel depots government establishments etc not roads that will affect normal people. No time for them as I can’t see how this makes a difference.

The only thing that might get a result is a rolling boycott of specific retail chains. E.g. everyone avoids brand x for a week or two, then y, and so on to scr*w their cashflow, and when they put prices back up (as they will) you rinse and repeat every time they do it. The problem is though, that if retailers can rig the prices they can also rig the supply and coordinate their response until someone breaks ranks. Perhaps if folk avoided a supermarket chain for a couple of weeks, including their stores where they have perishables, you might get results. Consumer power will only work if it's focused on the retailers, and hitting other road users won't have much effect; think of all the fuel that's going to be burned during the protests!

You need the Yellow Vests from France worked well here at the end of 18 and early 19.
For now people want a holiday but I'm sure they will be back out.

I'm amazed there hasn't been stronger protests about this. The profiteering has been ridiculous. The Putin narrative is a huge smokescreen and only part of the issue

I don't think the protests in the way are conducted are on point as affecting the very people it is affecting the most.

The best thing we can do is vote with your feet where possible and buy less or pick who you buy from. It is hard to near impossible these days to have an easy way to do this though. With a lack of competition and options it is much harder to have an impact. Which I guess has been the point and has achieved the goal from govts and big businesses for some time.

If we stop consuming or reduce consumption then we stop lining their pockets. Stop fighting them and play them at their own game. We need to think more objectively about how we can have greater impacts.

These protests will achieve nothing as are missing the point. I don't think govts really care or are bother what we think. They will do their own thing regardless until we stop them in objective ways. Boris has zero care for what we think about him or what he does clearly so how will any protest achieve anything?

People should just not vote at all any more and if nobody voted that would display a fairly damning indictment on the point of why they exist. For the people? I don't think so!

I agree with @rockits.

I have little doubt that the supermarkets are coordinating their prices with each other. One action we should all take is to boycott our regular supermarkets, that we have club memberships with. Buy from local, independent, small chain stores for a week or so. Hopefully that will reignite the competition between them.

Anyway, that’s what I’m doing…

As a reminder, to find cheaper fuel in a local area, I use petrolprices.com they have an app too. Waze will also find you a lower priced fuel station too. Both rely on people enterring the prices so not completely accurate.

Which got me thinking, do our European brothers have a similar site, and guess what they do.

So if you're in France, use https://plein-moins-cher.fr/en/index.html - it's a bit clumsy but it works. @Philw can you confirm?

and for Germany there's https://www.clever-tanken.de/ - which works a bit like petrol prices they also have an app.

I did find this one, which claims to be all over europe but is a bit slow in updating. https://gb.fuelo.net/?lang=en

So with a bit of planning you could save a few pounds.

That is a first … Just gone past Texico in Chepstow and they have always been the more expensive. Cheaper than Tesco now… 195.4 against 197.9 for diesel.

They are specifically who I’m boycotting at the moment!

Filled up yesterday, 1.93 for diesel in a small Shell Garage outside Tenby. Bit of a queue, but way cheaper than anyone and just shows how much some people are making. Rolling boycott a good idea.

Further to my point, a Texaco, near me, reknown to be expensive prior to this rise in prices is 191.9, this morning. The Shell at Gatwick is the same. Tesco 193.9
