high mileage 3200 auto..good or bad

I didn't think Auto's had anywhere near the same end float issues as the manual's..??
Much less likely in an auto, they're far more common in manuals. Endfloat is an issue which affected cars when they were younger and at lower miles. Generally speaking from the expert's point of view, if it's not happened by 40000 miles, it won't happen at all. I've heard that same thing from 5 or 6 of the most knowledgeable 3200 mechanics out there (I don't profess to being an engine expert whatsoever).

My car (a manual) was showing signs when David Askew bought it so he took the engine out and it was rebuilt as a precaution by Nuneaton Re-bores in 2010 when it had done 31,000, so in line with what your experts have said Richard. The thrust washers which are the weak part in question, were replaced with custom made phosphorus bronze washers and there have been no problems in the 4 & half years and 8,000 miles since
