I broke my toy!

After returning from Bruntingthorpe I noticed the handbrake was a couple of notches higher so I'm guessing I have at least one Delaminated shoe. However I took it out for a blast this evening and on parking up after the lever went all the way up and then the flipping button popped out.!!!!

So what's occurring? Guess I'll be calling David Askew and GB Brakes to get my old shoes relined quick!

It might be simpler than you think Newton.
We used to take them apart to make fly off hand brakes for our rally cars years ago for hand braking.
Can't believe they have changed the design over the years.
Hardest part is probably getting it out of the car to take a look.
Let us know how it goes mate.

Newton...you're playing with cars all the time :)

Mostly not through choice Nikos!

Phil; do you think it is just going to be the pin dropped out of the ratchet because it exceeded the range as far as the lever is concerned?

I think I may as well change the cable this time too.... It would be silly not to as I have to work on both ends anyway.

Why not just leave it in gear?

C

No problem doing that but there is no good reason why any handbrake shouldn't be serviceable, it is more a battle of will with me, plus with Italy coming up who knows were it will need to park. I also find that left in gear they often creep as the pressures are slowly lost in the cylinders.... An auto has a transmission lock so no problem, manual is not so lucky.

Ahh, all makes sense.

I'm getting mine sorted week after next. But more because it needed tightening up for the MOT, then wouldn't come off!

I hate to say this but the extra travel and the button popping out seem like two different problems to me. The handbrake lever may not be hard to fix, but some thing is clearly amiss there. I think the assembly is bolted from below, i remember seeing the bolts from below but i cant remember if they were removable without removing the prop shaft and/or exhaust.

Newton - please let me know if GB Brakes end up with a set of handbrake shoes that are ready to go on an exchange basis. I'm going to be renewing everything in my braking system soon so don't want to be held up waiting for handbrake shoes to arrive! Thanks

Mark I'm sending them my old set I replaced when I first got it 4 years ago to refurb for me. This means when I repair it next week I'll have the replacements available. You are welcome to have them to send off in advance for yours if you are happy to do the research on compatability ( apparently there are two types of shoe on the 4200).

Anyway I dropped in on DL Swindon on my way back this evening and bought an oil filter and ordered a replacement handbrake cable, will be in on Monday and posted to me. I'm hoping the lever is repairable as I think it just ran out of ratchet and dropped appart.
