Prep? I'll throw a bucket of water over mine by way of prep and off we go. Can't wait!

I've got at least 3 exhaust brackets that are broken, no idea where the clutch is and not a grain of wax on the poor thing! Then there is the hole in the paint on the wing to resolve; likely to be a sticker at this time....

Refurbished shoes have just arrived from Belfast Brakes; cracking service!!!! £35.00 of which nearly £6 is postage... I paid £135.00 for new shoes last time around so there you go!

Mark (MAF) has requested the other set from me when I remove them to do the same.... Mark, let me know if you want me to post them off to Belfast for you?

Well there's your problem....

Because it is mostly a left hand drive car, the handbrake lever is over that side meaning repeated yanking on the lever has bent it and allowed it to flair around the ratchet to the point the button part has passed beside it! Possibly repairable but would only be temporary so a new on if possible!

Had to cut the cable to get it released so glad to have a new one to put in...

Frustrating afternoon, couldn't get exhaust parts, brake pads etc. had to make do... Welded exhaust clamp back together. Put old pads back in pro tem. Didn't get the handbrake cable fully changed so she is up on stands in the alley overnight!

More tomorrow.

Well all done for this weekend and handbrake working splendidly even before the shoes are settled! Very rewarding changing the handbrake cable as it has made such an improvement in function. However it is NOT a job to be undertaken lightly or by the feint hearted; the balancing/splitting is all strapped to the side of the torque tube and one half of the cable is stapled over the top of the gearbox! Seriously if you want to do this, get the car on a proper lift, I seriously struggled on axle stands, even after two stage lifting to get my bulk under there. The job requires the fingers of a masseuse and the patience of a saint!

The old cable in many parts...

Good work and well done. I continue to be amazed at your fearless approach to these things, Newton. I have too many experiences of jobs where my initial confidence was far in excess of my abilities, experience and available equipment.

Not so much confidence, or ability; just the old adage that if you want a job done properly you should do it yourself.... Got me though so far though the van is proving tougher than I had imagined it could have been! due to vast changes to the engine management and wiring between the productions!

By the way Adam; I found a couple of green fold up chairs in the boot of the Maserati this morning, picked up at the end of Bruntingthorpe, believed to be yours?

Well I've just had a bit of a result; negotiated hard with a German breaker to get an excellent discount off listed price on a replacement handbrake leaver...

Lever.jpg

Down from €70 to €50 :)

Why didn't I buy the one at Eurospares???? Well If you have looked at the centre console on these you will note that Maserati are a lazy bunch of ....! and we all get a left hand drive lever so why would I buy another one that has been pulled across the car all its life? Went for a left hooker one that has always been pulled in the right direction... Simples!

Well it is actually worse than that; if you look at this picture of my old one from the previous page, the fixed ratchet cog wears on the soft alloy brace on the left side (top in the photo) as the pressed steel is cut out at this point. Because of this the mechanism on mine slips past the cog! I made a repair in the summer but it is failling already because of the wear to the alloy.
