I’m a bit out of touch, I was going to say I’ve got a pair of American Optical Pilots. They were the orginal supplier to the USAF and are what all the Gemini astronauts are wearing in photos they were only £50. Seems there £180 nowadays

Rarely wear sunglasses, certainly wouldn't entertain numbers like these but I did treat myself when last in the US to pick up a couple pairs much cheaper than they would have been here

They do look rather lovely. I'm unlikely to spend that much, but my varifocals weren't much less than the gold ones. The black ones are nearly reasonable.

Enjoy, Ewan

Talking of Italian loveliness, I’ve enjoyed Persols for the past 30 years and have ended up with a pair for each car. I like their history - Italy must have had some cool pilots wearing them since they started in 1917

Finally succumbed to reading glasses on my fiftieth and had some Persol frames converted.

Now to find an Hispano-Suiza and a matching pair of Ratti era glasses...

I love these. If I click through from the link the actual price seems a lot lower (£750 on home page £375 when I click on them) - am I missing something?

Answering my own question, yes I am. The lower figure is the deposit!

Be quick - I ordered mine 3 months ago and have number 118 of 150, so there can’t be many left (though it will depend on which model/colour you choose).

Dammit! I went for it, I figured they were about the same price as my fiancees new bifocals and I don't wear prescription lenses so fair is far and all that. Gone for Silver with Blu Victory, er sorry Matisse Blue lenses

They are expensive. But so are lots of the nicer things things in life. Be that £200k for 5 years at Eton, £100k for a Maserati, £50k for a Patek watch or £10k for a Hermes handbag. Of course, less expensive options of all of the above are available for all those that don’t see the value in them.

Of course, it would be better if I looked cool whilst wearing them. But looking cool isn’t something that happens to me!
