They do look rather lovely. I'm unlikely to spend that much, but my varifocals weren't much less than the gold ones. The black ones are nearly reasonable.

Enjoy, Ewan

I pay about £350 for my varifocals at Costco , one year I tried specsavers because they had a free sunglasses offer on , couldn’t see out of them , everything blurred so they sent them back for another go , just as bad so he asked to see my glasses

ah right , these are essilor lenses , we can get those but they’ll be £450 , it was at that point I found out they’re not all the same , went back to Costco and they were fine so I never go anywhere else now

Well Renauld are now going for the 'global luxury market' and those £750 sunglasses will now cost you £2250

Still waiting for mine which I purchased just days before this. That was a stretch but glad I did it.

....Of course, less expensive options of all of the above are available for all those that don’t see the value in them.....

There are two separate issues:
  • Do you see the value in them?
  • DO YOU HAVE OODLES OF MONEY?

Well like any expensive thing, it is not necessarily down to having oodles of money. I know plenty of people who, for example, may have 6-12 pairs of sunglasses the combined cost of which is likely in excess of this one pair (at previously advertised price). I have one pair of Police sunglasses purchased 20 years ago and have served me very well. I fully expect these Renauld sunglasses to see me out 20 years also. Buy once, buy well. So on that basis I see the value in them (provided they are of the highest quality) but I don't have oodles of money (at least not to spend frivolously). I tend to adopt this approach to everything I buy whether home appliances, hi-fi, cars, watches) so I don't have much of anything but highly value and look after what I do have.

Buy once, buy well.

The Sam Vimes theory of economics:

A really good pair of leather boots, the sort that would last years and years, cost fifty dollars. This was beyond his pocket and the most he could hope for was an affordable pair of boots costing ten dollars, which might with luck last a year or so before he would need to resort to makeshift cardboard insoles so as to prolong the moment of shelling out another ten dollars.

Therefore over a period of ten years, he might have paid out a hundred dollars on boots, twice as much as the man who could afford fifty dollars up front ten years before. And he would still have wet feet.

The thing is, it's pretty much true. I've just cleaned and put away my oldest pair of shoes. Coming up on 9 years, and still look great. Had more soles then I can count, so it's not quite as cheap as it perhaps appears but...

When I was a teenager I had a pair of 'Ferarri' sunglasses. Means I still can't spell Ferrari correctly first go....

Yeah, I'm in this cycle of thinking that spending £75 every 18 months having some £200 shoes re-soled is better than just buying a new £50 pair once a year....

These glasses have been re-priced and are now £2250. But as an existing owner I get a discount so can buy them for £1550 for the next two weeks. I don’t need another pair but thought I’d mention it just in case anyone on here wants a pair and would like to make that saving.

Sounds like a great bargain for someone!!!!

They are my favourite and most comfortable shoes. My first Barkers. Sadly rather more than £75 for a re-sole, but I still love them. I have to sign that I won't hold Barkers responsible if they fall apart when I send them back now.

Nice(ish) customer service story. Dropped a(nother) pair off at Bow Lane to be resoled in January. Normal 6 week turn around of course bang lock down hits.

No success in getting in touch as restrictions start to lift, then I get an email that refurbishments are open again. So try again with an email.
Next day an unknown number calls me: Hello Mr Matthews, Barkers shoes here. I've found your shoes. They are being couriered back from Bow Lane today. If you can let me have the best address, I'll have them couriered to you tomorrow,

And lo! The DHL man arrived with a lovely wrapped box and my shoes. With another shoe horn and another pair of laces and another polishing cloth.

I think I know have about 17 of each :D

Now he tells me :(

Scaf, more importantly most branded lenses (essilor, hoya, nikon etc) have a 2 yr anti scratch guarantee, for whatever reason. The manufacturers know they aren't scratch proof ) although the coatings are pretty good) so they would probably replace them if the practice sends them back.
Depending on what was said when you ordered more if might just be worth a new conversation...

Thanks, worth knowing for future.
As it happens insurance have paid with a £100 excess, so not too painful.

They do look lovely but I have to have prescription lenses which limited th3 choice somewhat.

I am picking up my new varifocal lenses from boots today £414 just to replace the lease scratched when I dropped them and they skidded cross the drive !

Yeah, I remember my shock couple of years ago when the Boots guys said "Ok, so two sets of Ray Ban varifocals; that will be £400, please."

Open the link and thought .....they look cool and could repace my Ray-Bans........Then saw the price...!!!!.....Surely no sunglasses are worth nearly £1000.....Taking the rise.

They seem to have decided they were far too cheap at £1000

Ewan may have just doubled his initial investment :D
