To me, it looks like the water pump drive has leaked and dumped the coolant. Coupled with that, it looks like the drive spline has rusted to such an extent that it no longer picked up drive and dumped the oil pressure as well. It could be that with a new 'female' drive gear, oil and water pump unit and a complete fluid service it could be back to normal if no damage has been caused by running without oil pressure. Fingers crossed!

Spot on Benny that's my thoughts entirely.
Can't believe that the water pump end is not lubricated.
The oil pump end running in engine oil is brand new.
My worry now having stripped one down is that this could affect all these engines.
I'm going to contact the Super Car Centre as I know them and they have rebuilt 4200 engines.
Watch this space.

Does it look like the water pump end is not lubricated in general or does it look like it's something anomalous about this engine? It is hard to believe that would be the norm...but we account for stranger behaviour by saying "ah, it's Italian!"

They're failing at a rate of knots. Just try ordering one from Italy. On my 4200 I caught mine just in time, but I personally know of three others that have gone taking the engine with them. This problem also affects the QP's.

Got one ordered Miles.
Even if I went down the second hand route I would want to strip it and check it and probably renew.
When yours was done Miles did they assemble the water pump end dry?
Phil.

Phil, when you do resolve this can you post a how to on how to inspect this. Do I assume that the rust is at the rear end of the water pump or is it at the join between the oil and water pump?

The water pump drives off the timing chain from memory, its this correct?

Matt the rust is at the point where the shaft goes into the female drive at the back of the timing chain.
Everything else as new.
On the engine you have apart did you remove the assembly from the block ?
Be interested to see what that one is like.

Does this look like it may be an achilles heel? Be good to get an insight and fix. Another insight into why the forum is invaluable.

Looking at Eurospares diagrams for the Spyder, the pump is driven by item 11 on diagram 6, a gear inside the timing control chamber.
This is connected to a female gear, item 14 on diagram 18 - the pump diagram.
Which in turn is connected to the male gear on the drive shaft for the water and oil pump.

So to check the state of these, do you need to go through the timing chain cover first or can it be viewed externally?

The best way is through the timing chain cover. There is anecdotal evidence that the weakness in the pump is exacerbated by a weakness in the timing chain tensioners (not sprung as well as they could be), which throws stress into the driven end of the pump, with the (already rusting) splined shaft being the failure point. Another currently anecdotal cause is sonic resonance in the splined shaft itself.

Hi Phil,

I'd be interested to know what delivery date you've been given? Shiltech ordered two at the same time for a Spyder and QP that had both failed and I recall they waited 10 weeks or so?

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by assembled dry specifically?

Just spoken with Russ at Autoshield and tells me to grease the shaft before putting it into the female gear.
Going to remove the front cover now to just see what else I might see and post more pics as it unfolds.

Being a bit dim here, but is this part in the coolant ? So doesn't it have a rust inhibitor in the coolant ?

Paul this shaft is not in the coolant.
It goes into a gear driven off the back of the timing chain assembly.
When I get back on it I will get some more pics to better explain.
Phil.
