Mark no oil or water contamination so I'm going to get her running and go from there.
This is my game of golf and I'm loving it.

So the noise could have been just the water pump, if that's so you have a result there mate..!!

So is that oil pump aswell that's shot, even though it looks new..?? I wonder if the variators are OK, they might have survived if your lucky..!!

Isn't the oil pump and water pump a single unit? So the water pump side being shot, means changing the complete oil/water pump unit.

You can only get the complete assembly and when you look at it in my opinion not bad value for Money.
DL have done me a good deal just got to wait for it to come.

Yes - that's my car from this years event. The pic was taken by a friend, Mark.

Were you there too? I've been supporting the event from the beginning.

Sadly not. I've only done it once, in 2012 as I've been away working for the last two. I had a great time, apart from some guy in a yellow 430 spider who was driving like a prat, and will have to try to get to next years thrash.

Phil, a fascinating thread and thanks for all the posts. Noting:

- Water pump shot and not enough oil pressure to load the 32 lifters.

curious as to the consequential damage and what made it a non runner? Too early to call yet until you try firing it up with a new pump?

Sounds like whatever damage on the water pump also reduced the oil pressure to the detriment of the lifters.

If it's only the lifters, this could be something of a bargain

Previous owner did say he stopped immediately when he heard the noise, so with a bit of luck it might just be the pump and the engine could be OK, that would be a real result..!!

I had her running as I drove her onto my trailer and off again when I got her home.
I'm confident that with the new assembly going back in and getting water and coolant moving she will be OK.
I have had issues with *** 20 valve turbo engines and long life service the oil pick up carbons up and no oil circulation getting to the top of the engine.
They sound awful. Strip and clean them flushing the engine and two oil changes sweet as a but.
The only problem with this engine is its loads of work.
Just got to wait for the parts from the factory now.

That spline looks like it's been going for a long time. What condition is the gear in that the spline fits into? Was the water pump seized?

Got to check the female gear there is a lot of rust there.
Water pump was stiff but not seized.
Whole of oil pump assembly is as new.
Dont know why it wasn't designed to be driven of the chain with a sprocket like a lot of diesel injection pumps are ?

The pump drive is well rusty but no rusty coolant came out and the water pump impellor was like new with no corrosion evident.
More phone calls tomorrow.
