I do have long legs Bob but actually prefer a smaller frame, compact road style. The Pinarello is a 51.5 although they do size differently so it's a 53 in "normal" sizes. The tyres in the photo are 23 Schwalbe Durano but actually I changed to 25 Continental GPIII. The 25's are definitely faster and more grippy. I didn't realise how worn the contact surface on the old tyres was until I put new ones on !!

I have a very good friend in Italy who is an ex-pro. He has a high end bike shop and deals Pinarello, Colnago and Specialized to the pro and semi-pro teams for the factories. They trade the bikes in after a year or so and my friend moves them on. Basically, I can can get the most amazing stuff 2nd hand but always from a top team hence full time looked after etc. They won't sell anything that's been crashed etc so I got my Pinarello from the,. It's a 2013 running full Ultegra, Time pedals, Fulcrum wheels etc with a spec around £4k. I paid £1250 in mint condition which I think you'll agree is cheap.

I've helped a few friends get bikes from them and actually we have two coming this week.

1) Pinarello Dogma with full Campagnolo Super Record etc. £8k spec, coming in at £3300 delivered from Italy

2) Colnago 50th Anniversary. This a rare retro styled bike that was around £5k here. We've got it for £2k and I understand that these bikes go for $10k on USA Ebay ! It's one for the collector.

I've seem ex-team Sky stuff appear and one of the boys has one from 2011 ex-Lopez.

Anyway, if anyone fancies a bike north of £1k, let me know and i'll see what I can get. It's pot luck and if you're patient, something will appear.

Good deals. I recently put my 'summer tyres' on - Conti GP4000S. I run the Conti 4 Seasons in the shoulder months and then use a cyclocross bike in the winter on 32 section knobbly tyres. I've always run 25s on my summer bike and see a lot of people coming back up from 23s. I'm really enjoying the new middle aged, middle class golf replacement that road cycling has become. I am out for the same amount of time but avoid the paunch and the booze.

+1 on the Colnagos. I have a CLX from 2008 which I still adore. That one has seen me up to the top of Ventoux on two occasions, as well as completing the Marmotte.

Mind you, ironically enough my only actual Italian frame is an old Ribble (made by Deda) which I use as a winter hack, so go figure!

"Best" bike has plenty of Italian componentry on it, though...

Loving the bike talk. When I left the bicycle industry over 20 years ago, I bought a Colnago which I still have. It hangs on the wall in front of the Maserati. it is kitted out with Suntour Superbe Pro ensemble, Cinelli bars and stem and spokes so thin I snap them as I'm a bit heavier now.
I still have my first road bike from the mid 1970's a custom built Reynolds 531 frame, all chrome and 1st generation Dura Ace. Those were the days. Also had Diaccordi track bike and a 1960 Cinelli track bike with early Campagnolo ensemble. Sold it to a bicycle museum.

The only thing that's different from that photo now, is the saddle now is a Selle Italia titanium/carbon Max Flite.

Yes, that was put together 8 or 9 years ago, made to measure to fit me. I'm a tiny bit fatter now, but my arms and legs are still the same length :)

I have a MTB made in the same way too :)

The cost of Ti is now too high to make it worthwhile. You can effectively buy a pro quality carbon frame for half the price of a good quality titanium. However, the Ti frame will last to all intents and purposes 'forever', and can be repaired if it's damaged. Sublime to ride too.

I have a £100 cast iron hybrid lump from Decathlon - it's great for exercise as I don't feel like I'm cheating with uber lightweight stuff. Strangely my mates take the pi$$ out of it - can't think why..

Nor can I mate - I have a second-hand bike (in the n+1 collection) that easily weighs more than a Victorian bed...

£50 from eBay, but it's actually a decent thing to ride and suitable for locking to a bike rack, or rather, expecting it to be there when I get back.

As Lance said... it's not about the bike... In his case, that was certainly the case :D

Although as Maserati owners we should all be comfortable with the idea of bits wearing out! ;)

I'm hedging my bets, I have a selection of steel, aluminium and carbon frames in my little collection...

How limited is limited?

When I got my first carbon bike everyone was telling me I shouldn't ride it to work everyday as it would not be suitable!!

That was 8 years ago. It is still going strong and I ride it through the 4 seasons.

We got a Pinarello Razha K built for someone a couple of months ago. These are sold by Pinarello for £2k retail but it's a £1650 frame which shows you for **** the components on a retail version are. We built one with Campagnolo Athena, Most seatpost/stem/bars, Selle Italia team saddle and Fulcrum wheels for £2k brand new. So that's another way to go.
