How limited is limited?

When I got my first carbon bike everyone was telling me I shouldn't ride it to work everyday as it would not be suitable!!

That was 8 years ago. It is still going strong and I ride it through the 4 seasons.

No idea, you know how it is with stories for these things. My Madone is five years old and has not collapsed yet.

Carbon bikes can crack if you have an accident but metal can suffer from fatigue. I've not had any issue with my carbon bike nor did I have with the Giant OCR that I had before it. If you look after them, there should be no issue.

I agree with outrun. My Colnago has done many thousands of miles over the 7 years I've owned it with no problems, and my NeilPryde frame has a 10-year guarantee so they must be fairly confident!

I think the old comments are more about the near impossibility of repairing a damaged carbon frame, and they are certainly more susceptible to cracks from side forces. If you never put the bike in the hands of aircraft baggage handlers, or have others stacked on top of it in the back of a car, then they should last perfectly well. Current carbon frames have advanced tremendously in the last 15 years too - incredibly tough now compared to the early frames.

You can repair them Drew but to do it well, repaint properly etc makes it not usually worthwhile. It will always be a repaired frame so I guess the Cat D of bikes ! Carbon is of course designed to be very strong in a particular way and therefore can be weak when receiving forces in other directions or angles. That's why it's not good to have a crash on a carbon frame or indeed why F1 cars sometimes lose wheels and the like when carbon suspension components are subject to unusual forces on impact etc.

A cracked carbon frame will still hold strong in many cases but the risk is total and sudden failure which is not cool at 40mph on a mountain pass !!

Judging by the number of posts on here you can see why prestige car manufacturer's sponsor things like this.

My pushbike was won in a raffle for £1.50 and has seen me overtake a few lycra clad £1000 bike mounted guys up the hilly Queens Road in Westbourne in the summer coming back from work.
All the gear, no idea.

Hilarious! I don't think I could even sell mine for £1.50!
