An SL (or CL) would be a great choice, and far more suited to comfort and high miles than a Boxster. Even getting in and out of a Boxster, at 6ft3 and 18st, would not be a pleasant daily ritual. The girlie Porsche is the better sports car of the two, granted, but that's not high up the list of priorities on this occasion.

Not only is the SL more relaxing, it's more spacious, has a proper roof, and far nicer interior. For the role discussed, for my money it easily beats the Boxster.

(Quick confession. I own an SL. ;))

I've owned three SLs - loved them. An AMG SL63 wafted past me in Edinburgh the other day roof down, trouble is the driver was 15+ years older than me...put me off getting another one a bit.

Sometimes starting with a turd isn't a bad place which is a sad & sorry state of affairs!

When I joined some people thought I was mad. My rational was that in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. As it goes I'm not sure who was right!

The idiots are right & we are the right idiots. Abnormal is normal these days & us apparent normal people seem to be on a different planet. I feel like an alien half the time

I'm OK when I'm asleep though....I think...

Quite. Once read "You are only what others see you as".
Bit too Freudian for my simplistic mind - plus it sounds like a load of old tosh anyway.

Half the price of an SL65 but still bloody nice & bloody quick. Can almost swap my SL500 for that!

Only 800nm of torque & 493bhp

Come to think of it the E55K has 699nm & 469bhp @ £10k

In view of my post regarding my GT being up for sale, my choice of new car has changed massively and I’ll be picking up something substantially cheaper and running that in the short term.

Food for thought for after the period of less than great cars though.

Depends how much cheaper Mark but I found my C250 CDI a great daily family drive. Engine us strong and pulls well. The car feels solid and with AMG line stuff on to me looks pretty good as well. Mine is a 2014 and cost me 12k from Mercedes with 50k on the clock but good ones can be had for well under 10k now. To my eyes it looks better than the later shape.

I'm looking at 4k tops to spend!

Still plenty out there. An scruffy 350 SL is looking like one of the favourites at the moment.

Just a thought - for example:

Comfortable, quiet and will do 40+mpg on the motorways if driven reasonably.
Plus plenty quick if driven vigorously, but, you'd almost have to give it away in a year or so.
With the sort of mileage you're talking about but, hopefully, so what.

Funny, i'm looking at an estate one for my dogs. There are loads go through the auctions, I reckon I can get an Aero Hot estate with less than 100k miles for £1-1.5k at auction which is worth the risk I reckon. They are cool and huge...

We have discussed the 9-3 turbo convertible here too and it's a mega bargain as well. £2-4k buys a very nice one and it's classless so most folk won't have a clue that it cost so little. That's one of the reasons I have a Mini as a daily. A very nice Mini buy to the untrained eye, it's just another Mini.

Very nice. Haven't got to Saab's yet. Have spent the morning looking on Ebay and Auto trader.
Merc's and Audi's are the cars of choice thus far. And 1 BMW
