Track-day & Bruntingthorpe insurance

Just called my insurance broker - A-Plan, in Thatcham - who told me they don't and won't provide any kind of insurance cover for track days. As Bruntinghtorpe is clearly a track I'm working on the basis that despite the fact that this weekend is not a track-day in the traditional sense track-day insurance will still be needed.

Soooo.... any recommendations on which insurance company could be worth talking to? I know that some of them include one or two track-days per year as part of a general policy so I'm half-inclined to cancel my current policy and go to someone new if the deal is right.

Thanks.

A-Plan..... who sorted me out, I didn't say this was a track day but gave them the info of the day so they could confirm - however it may be who they have backed your cover with. can't remember who I am backed off with but they also confirm that I was OK but did say that all T&C still apply (what ever that meant)

it maybe who they are using won't support this for you - could be worth another call to them but giving them the details as its not on a track but on an dis-used airfield (lots of room) and as you said it is not racing as they release one at a time

Thanks Enzo, I'll try that approach. Aviva is the underwriter. I'll call APlan again and see what they say. They were adamant before that they don't do track-day cover so I need to go elsewhere. Helpful!

Hmmm... 175 quid to cover a day at Brunto and 2.5k excess... wow!

Seems high to me. Thoughts form the rest of you?

I know for Llandrow most don't bother we cover...........Its a risk but we have never had a car crash or damaged on track in the 4 years we have been going. A proper organised day is very safe but you have to feel confident with your own ability and not drive outside of that...

That's a fair point, Andy.

Moris called and will talk to the insurer tomorrow and see if they can get a better deal. Given that's a private event offering plesaure rides, helmets aren't used and it's not a race they reckon they can. I'll update this thread and if anyone wants to take out the cover they can. For me the price and the excess are both far too high.

Gents,

Got me thinking... I'm comfortable with self insuring for myself, but what's the score with ur passengers... Just checked my policy & it excludes any organised event..
Whats the general consensus, if a passenger gets injured.. who foots the bill? Or do the organisers stipulate they travel at their own risk?

Strange regarding A-Plan and track days.
I'm currently with them and it cost me £20 for them to cover me for an Anglesey Track Day earlier in the year.
The track has to be a MSA approved circuit though for them to offer cover. This does exclude a few circuits, for example I know they don't cover Blyton Park, because it is not a 'proper motor racing circuit' and not listed by the MSA.

I'm pretty sure the waiver can't enforceably waive liability for death or personal injury arising from negligence. There must be some cover in place - I'd be amazed if Asda hadn't got it sorted (but it would be good to know for sure). What I would like to know is that if I stack my car I can get the bu66er fixed, as well as anything it hits.

Unless you have track day cover....which covers damage to your own car only and you, that's it!
Passengers at there own risk, and anything else you hit.
That's the risk...you could be a saint on a track day and an idiot runs into the back of you...tough...the only way you can get your car repaired on insurance is your own personal track day insurance if you have it.

This is correct, in the UK you cannot waive liability from death or personal injury.

Perhaps Brunty John or Andy K can advise on this. There are far higher value cars taking part and this event has been running for years, so I can't imagine this is the first time these questions have been asked.

To be honest MAF I would imagine most don't insure but wouldn't like to say either way as it's up to the individual....I'll get hold of John tomorrow and see what he says.

Andy,

That would be appreciated... Questions for me are:-

Are the organisers covering liability for death or serious injury of passengers?
If not does responsibility transfer to the driver(s)
If so, & liability is with the driver, & he does not have valid insurance, could he be sued by the organiser, passenger for damages & losses?

Thanks

Dave

I don't think we cover Liability as its by invitation onl and not open to the public....I believe this is how we get round the whole insurance bit......Same reason why you don't need to wear crash helmets etc....I get it confimred though...

I just spoke to Admiral, my car is covered under a multi-car policy with them. Explained that its a private event where we drive people round for a charitable donation, no racing, timing or pace-making involved and that I would be the only driver. I'm covered as if on the road with no additional premium. Definitely worth double-checking IMHO.

Thanks Chris.

APlan and Aviva are not shaping up to be very much use here... Time to give them another call, I think.

Right... another conversation with APlan and they have directed me to and clarified the exclusions in my policy:

"... hiring, commercial travelling, competition, performance test, trial, race or trial of speed, including off-road events, whether between motor vehicles or otherwise, and irrespective of whether this takes place on a circuit or track, formed or otherwise, regardless of any statutory authorisation of such event or any purpose in connection with the Motor Trade."

The salient point is that this is an off-road event at a location which is indisputably a vehicle proving ground and race track. I queried whether the exclusion referred to the location or the activity and apparently it's the former. Presumably we're more inclined to drive like nutters on a track. So I'm not covered.

Andy - do you know if Bruntingthorpe offers any track-day cover? I dropped them a note via their online enquiry form (they don't list a phone number) and am also waiting for Moris to call back. I'll let you know how I get on. Regardless, I'll be there; I just want to make sure I'm covered. The lesson I've learned is to go with an insurer which can add in thorough track-day cover for a nominal fee.

Not sure Adam, best contact them direct as you have....Not heard of tracks providing cover before but I could be wrong.
