What to buy?

OK as some of you on here are intelligent I thought you might be able to help me out ;)

Mate of mine currently runs a DB7 Vantage and a Lexus 250 as his classic and daily runner / family bus. Due to his wife acquiring a 525 Touring he no longer needs to provide the family bus and so he has decided to sell both the Aston & Lexus and buy a modern sportscar that he can use daily. My challenge is to help him find something:-

I though you guys might like to help too.....

The Brief

Budget upto £45k
Age: 2006 Onwards
Mileage: less than 30k

Comfortable , daily commute is 120miles but occasionally unto 250 per day,
2 (or 2+2) Seater that stand out from the crowd - would like a ragtop (but not essential). Needs to be different so no hot major brands, i.e. M cars, RS Audi etc - in fact mainstream products are probably non starters.
No silly servicing costs, but this is flexible, after all he has owned an Aston
Performance must be strong, Would prefer an auto (not essential but he is getting lazy these days), economy is not a concern but given the mileage anything in the 20s would be better than something in the teens.

I think that's all I can think of.

My initial list for him to consider is:-

Aston Vantage or DB9 - (he does like his Astons)
Maser Gransport or GranTurismo (he loves my Spyder)
Lotus Evora (a bit off the wall but I hear lots of good things about them)

Can he get a GranCabrio for that kind of money? I don't know that market, but it would give him a grand touring ragtop that fits his other criteria.

Jag F-Type Convertible? Bentley? There are so many cars in that price range to choose from.

Aston Vantage will bore him to tears after a DB7. No real go but sounds good.

Easy one for me.

997 turbo tiptronic

Reliable, usable in all weather, reasonably efficient, will hold a good chunk of value.

I'd also consider the new PDK Boxster S. It's an awesome car and for £45K he can get a new one or nearly new with warranty etc etc.

The only problem with the Porsches is that they are just to common, can't argue that they meet the criteria in every way but just a bit too easy.

Astons are pretty common too. The right Porsche is a much better car.

It's a shame that £45k won't buy a 993 turbo as they are the best of the best. And not common at all.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti?

ETA: R8, Vanquish (may not be new enough), Mercedes SL65 AMG...

612 is a good shout. Potential monster running costs as a daily driver though. Amazing value to buy.

Going back to the daily mileage, there is only one sports/super car that fits the bill of all year round ability to cover between 125 and 250 miles per day IMHO. 997 (C2S, C4S or Turbo variants). All other brands would be ruinous in my view both from running cost and depreciation viewpoints. For my money a 997.2 C2S would provide the best fun, fuel economy, prestige balance for this task. Servicing at 2 years or 20k miles and 35 MPG if you aren't on it. If you want the ultimate, then a gen 1 turbo is on budget and fits the all weather bill even more.

If he has money to burn, then go elsewhere, but think astons and masers would batter your wallet with this task.

I must admit, the Porsche does tick all the boxes for a daily driver.
My mate has a lovely 997 Turbo gen 1 tiptronic that would I imagine tick all the boxes.
Its done less than 10K miles I think, as a toy car, black with red leather, although currently it is wrapped!
I think he has an itch again (every two years!) and will be looking to sell, wrapped or not!
It is totally immaculate, and with very low miles...

Lotus Evora S hard to live with as a daily driver.......high sills, not easy to get in and out, cramped interior, and some of the instrumentation very poor.........but they are fun to drive, even with the automatic/paddle gearbox

Surprised nobody has suggested the GranSport Spyder so far?
