Well, according to the OP "mainstream products are non-starters" so it has to be something rare!

Pity he's ruled out Audi as an R8 would fit the bill very well, much rarer than a 911, cheaper to service, reliable and barely depreciate, although the miles he will add will knock a chunk off. £45k would get him a brand new Cayman, or a year old with lots of toys or some change.

His budget is not too far off a brand new Ghibli diesel. And the 40mpg will quickly bring some money back in compared to the 20mpg of many other options, especially considering his daily mileage.

But if I were to do that many miles everyday, it'd have to be a QP. Smaller sports cars (such as a 911) become tiresome after that many miles every day. A Bentley must be on the radar, surely?

That said, I did a lot of miles in my Diablos and had them as daily drivers, commuting between Dorset and London. But I was younger then. And slimmer.

He won't buy new - fact

The R8 has him interested. Don't think I can get him into a Porker regardless of how well they fit the bill.

Diablo everyday, are you mad ?

Lotus Evora S hard to live with as a daily driver.......high sills, not easy to get in and out, cramped interior, and some of the instrumentation very poor.........but they are fun to drive, even with the automatic/paddle gearbox

An Evora is a dream to live with....Compared to an Elise/Exige that is.....I was on an Evora last week and was blown away by how comfortable it was...it felt like a Lotus on the bends but I thought it was a great everyday Lotus....Sills are high compared to normal cars but not as bad as I thought thought they would be...But then I suppose it all depends how tall/big you are...

Ewan just said QP, not acknowledged. A QP 4.7S or GTS has to be the car, great cruiser and comfortable and they drive as well if not better than a Granturismo GTS. There's some amazing bargains about at the moment such as:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...-quattroporte-4-7-sport-gts-high-spec/2063530

Stick 20000 miles on it and it's still a low miler. There are cars a year or two newer with more miles for £70-80k. That's an 8000 mile half price QP. It'll do 23+mpg as a daily driver too.

I guess servicing costs are based on personal experience, but I disagree with R8 servicing being less than equivalent 911. Mate of mine has had R8 vV8 and now has V10 and servicing has definitely not been less than my many 911s. Although later post suggest OPs friend doesn't like Porsche it would do him no harm to drive one if he hasn't. I had the same view until I had a go in a boxter and became a brand fan. I do think that an R8 is doable for the high mileage if Porsche is ruled out, but other more exotic brands will punish the wallet and possibly disintegrate!

Just out of interest would people buy BMW's if they moved back to something more like this?

I wouldn't want to pile miles onto a Gransport Spyder at that pace. I love my GS but I don't think I would want to have it as an only car. I know people have done it but seriously, it's doesn't like it.

Favourites at the moment are Porker C4S and Nissan GTR
Tell him to talk to a GTR owner before purchasing. I have, and the guy came from a C4S into the GTR and regretted it! Main reason was the difference in servicing costs. At 20,000-30,000 miles per year which is his projected mileage the GTR would need servicing between 4-5 times per year (6k intervals), a C4S would need 1 or 2 (20k intervals). That in itself would be orders of magnitude higher in terms of cost for the GTR but the issue for me would be the irritation factor of having my car at the dealers garage almost as much as it spends in my garage!

Even a Granturismo might make a lower cost option.....
