Range Rover advice

18 MPG is about what we average, it will do low 20s on a run but you don't want to look at mpg on short winter school runs
Considering the enjoyment factor, I don't think that's bad in comparison to a TD6 that averages 25 and is actually slower up hills than walking.

I seem to recall that during my ownership of that car, it averaged 18mpg. Maybe you can do better than me! Fingers crossed.
In the hybrid RR I changed it for, I’m averaging about 34mpg. So the LR engineers have made some progress.
The new hybrid is obviously better again, but is somewhat expensive. I’ll have to wait a couple of years or so and then take a look at the second-hand values.

Wow...I have a 2 year average in the XC90 petrol Hybrid of 65.6 mpg.

That’s in line with new RR hybrid. Whereas mine is the earliest one, with the 3 lt diesel, and only does maybe 0.5 miles on electric only, so a very different system to the modern style. I think Harry Metcalfe mentioned averaging about 70mpg in his RR. It’s amazing the leaps in tech in just a few years.

Ah sorry I thought you had the c25 mile range PHEV version Ewan.

Cost is an interesting one as I am able to make use of a lot of free chargers at various places I travel to. supermarket, the car park near work, the pubs and restaurants we frequent; and I do make a point of topping it up where I can.

At home a full charge is about £1.60 on the overnight charge rate.

Range is limited as are all PHEV, our model has the 31 mile range and if you put the car in 'Pure' it will do that as long as its not all uphill.

All our normal running about is electric. My commute is 60/40 in favour of electric.

The only time it does not make sense is using the fast charging network as that is pricey and the car will not charge any faster. As such it is roughly £4.50 for that.

In pure petrol mode it will do c38mpg... and it is almost as fast to 60 as the GS... about 5.2 seconds. In Hybrid mode it is as I say close to 65mpg over the two years we have had it or c20k miles

Yes they are a compromise, but one that suits us perfectly... and of course the new ones now do c50 miles in EV mode

I thought it might be more than that for a full charge at home. It’s actually pretty good then.

Appointment with Arnold Clark is at 11am to sell the GR Yaris

It's not a done deal until I say yes and start signing bits of paper but having had a look around what 8-9k buys in the big suv market I'm not sure I'm not better off forking out the monthlies on it.

10 months on their trade offer is £160 over list

This really is the hardest car decision I've ever had to make , I can't imagine how ****** off I'll be if toyota stop building the GR Yaris , they haven't taken an order for 18 months.

This one looks ok but there's that many listed with problems they are quite scary , a snapped crank bill is around 5k

A colleague at work has a diesel Disco 4 from 2013 that he bought new. Now done about 160k miles with no breakages and just standard servicing at local LR independent. It’s been a great workhorse and his intention is simply to run it into the ground (whenever that might be).

Our farmers have the same Ewan and it has been far more reliable than its brand-new replacement... also not all the new ones have a low ratio gearbox for towing in reverse?

The only issue I have heard with Discos is the turbos are ***** of a job and some fail and others don't so you takes your chance

Why do you need low ratio to tow in reverse?

Horse box towing apparently... the older Discovery had it as standard, but the new ones it an option as most are use by Mums.

I know horses are jumpy but how slow do you need to go!? Reverse is always the lowest gear anyway. The reason you often see people being pulled out by a car in reverse is that it’s lower than first.

Our local LR specialist is not a fan of the TDV6s - inlet manifolds amongst other expensive repairs. Design issues that JLR deny as they don't want a recall nightmare. V8 petrol or diesel are more robust. Of course there are exceptions to all rules....

My problem with Discos, is I really hate the look of estate cars that looks like someone designed a saloon and then crudely bolted on a bit at the back. And all Discos seem to be the SUV equivalent of that.

Whereas most Range Rovers look like someone designed the whole thing on purpose.
