Dont sound like its run enough, 30mins is not enough, i usually go on a good drive then let it idle for 10mins....turn the battery off i think if it was me

Hi Beau, the engine can be a little bit noisy until it reaches full operating temperature, not much but a little, so i would not panic about the tappet type noise, yet. you need to be careful with disconnecting the battery too as it does learn the engines running state to some degree and every time you cycle power it restarts to some extent, so to get it to run smoothly and trouble free you need to leave it all connected and have faith! So i would agree it needs a decent drive, you will soon get the feel if its going ok. I would say that if it still idles badly and you didn't actually check it I would remove the plenum and check the cover, its easy to miss and it does make it idle badly (and its cheaper to check and fix than messing with the throttle body or the pedal sensor, which is what you need to think about if its not the plenum cover).

ok i took it for a 30 mile run, its running alot smoother, it lacks power in higher gears, 1st gear is very fast, boosts hard, 2nd,3rd isnt very fast at all really, doesnt misfire or nothing but anyway, ignore this for now, i will start diagnosing this later.

what i am concerned about is the tapping noise, it has got worse, but its stayed the same, ie got worse but hasnt got more worse.

it sounds like its coming from the nearside cam cover, i have removed the cam cover, does there seem anything unusual here? it seems very oily, is that how it normally looks?

from 1000 revs-1800 revs the noise sounds harsh, over 2000 and you cant hear it.

when i turn the engine over on the key (injectors unplugged) every now and again i can hear a 'tick' noise come from the cam area, really dont know what to do!

im not sure what you mean? the drivers side of the engine sounds smooth, the passenger side sounds like a diesel

The cams and lobes look to have plenty of oil and don't look worn, so it can't be starvation. Unless as Matt says one of the cams is slightly off, if you have low power under torque, this might be a problem?? Could even be a knock sensor, the power loss.

Suggest you give Roberto a call at Grimaldi Engineering in Halsted Essex , pretty sure heoffer some friendly advice and give you some pointers

Sorry I thought you said it had flat power in higher gears.

If it were an Alfa TwinSpark engine it would be the cam variator but I don't think this engine has that.

I would check the cam timing on that bank. It's not too difficult if you take the belt cover off. Do you have the data to do this?

Also can you start the engine with the cam cover off and use a stethoscope to diagnose it. You will need to make an oil deflector and use alot of rags, just an idea?

Sounds messy Mat and a bit heath robinson tho may do the trick to localise where the noise is coming from , are the tappets on those self adjusting , Bills suggestion sounds nearer the mark

Yep, that right Phil, I have a 1969 Opel GT and thats where I got the idea from. What I have seen alot of guys do is to get an old cam cover and cut the middle out so you can get to the valves, if you only idle the car and have a deflector, you will be surprised how civilised it is, it you rev it, thats a different story!

I hope it is, that would make a quick resolve.

Can you explain a bit more on how you adjust it? I thought it was not adjustable, and used solid lifters....I am probably wrong, but would like to know how the valve system works.
