il let u know once i check the clearances, its raining here atm so cant, iv got a few ideas on what to do, but im thinking again it may be easier to get it done at a specialist, without a stock of the shims its not really viable job and could take weeks waiting for shims then ordering new ones if they arnt right!

i have checked the clearances, and they are too tight, the gaps on the exhaust side are what the inlets should be (roughly) and i cant even fit the feeler gauge in on the inlet cam

Hi Beau,

I agree that you should take it to a specialist, I have watched my Alfa mechanic go through the process, he has a set of 20 shims on hand a special caliper that makes it simple to measure the gap. He also will only do this job when the engine is dead cold, so that there can be no variations due to expansion. It was time consuming on 4cyls and 8 valves, it is going to be a lot worse with 32 valves!

Good Luck
Ross

Reminds me of the other week when we were brought back from Masham on the back of a truck, nice Hummer.

hi, well the car spent near on 2 weeks there, shim's done, and it still makes the tapping noise, Roberto does not know what it may be without further investigation so i had to take it away.

i have had a local person have a look, and they think it could be a worn camshaft, but in short, not totally sure, but they did say the noise is made in time with the cams not the crank so 90% sure its top end, and it defiantly sounds top end.

the noise sounds less harsh when the engine is hot

i have done over 100 miles in the car now of mixed driving and the noise has not changed at all.

EDIT= 1 thing though, the noise is defiantly less harsh, not as loud since the shims and an oil change has been done, so 1 or both of those things has effected it defiantly, before either was carried out the engine sounded rather terminal, now the noise just sounds like a slightly tappy engine.

Have you determined which bank it is , or is it both sides ........................could be worth changing out a head

Just one thought: (of cause has nothing to do with the engines noise), when I look at the air filters, I am wonderinging where the original vacuum hose from the original left air filter box to the Kayser Valve is connected now? . There are very early models without Kayser Valve so this is not absolutely neded Item but I would assume there have been reasons to add the Kayser valve (and the vacuum hose on the air filter box).

Beau,
It would be interesting for us to know mate, it could be one of us one day with the same issue and we all try to share our experiences.
Cheers

Beau,
If it was your fault mate and that's why you don't want to say, don't worry we have all been there at some point, we don't judge.

i dropped the gearbox oil on my audi instead of the engine oil last week ( as was lowest drainn plug), then i couldnt get the gearbox fill plug out! so no oil in gearbox, managed to get oil in via the breather cap at top of the gearbox. Finally got the plug done yesterday with 2 hours of gentle persuation

More likely someone else's fault and Beau not willing to make a big issue of it on a public forum?
