I hope it is, that would make a quick resolve.

Can you explain a bit more on how you adjust it? I thought it was not adjustable, and used solid lifters....I am probably wrong, but would like to know how the valve system works.

you have to measure, check what size shim you require then order it in and fit

to be honest i think i can only check them, a special tool is required for replacement unless you remove the belt & cams, so if they are out it will probably have to go to specialist

Ok, worth a try.

Do bare in mind the how too's you appear a very hands on chap and the forum is here to pass on knowledge like this and to encourage the home mechanic to have a go.

I wonder how much the special tool is, somebody could maybe get one and rent it out to DIY chaps??

does anyone have any idea of what i can use instead of the special tool to push the valve down to remove the shim?

Not too conversant on the 3200 set up but i should imagine it cant be too hard to shape something like a flat iron (old fashioned name for a tyre lever) into something that resembles a valve spring lifter , if you have a bench grinder should be quite easy ...........he says ............................and Urby that valve spring lifter not SHIRT LIFTER

I imagine if you get a valve spring compression tool, you will be able to compress the spring so the valve drops, they are available on line!

I think you could only user a valve compression clamp with the head off Rob, this needs to be done in situ , so something with the same opening but bent an at an angle suitable for lifting , still need 2 pairs of hands tho

it cant be a valve spring compression tool though, theres a cap over the valve spring - this is what needs to be pushed down so they shim can be slipped out and replaced.

iv currently mis-laid my feeler gauges so i cant do nothing yet anyway, fingers crossed i find 1 or 2 clearances way out.

I think all valve springs have caps on to keep them straight, there must be something available to do that job, the fingers would sit on top of the plate and push down evenly.

At the very least one rather large gap , here's hoping Beau

How about this, on my Opel GT, same Cam in head configuration, a known method for replacing the valve stem seals, is to push string into the piston then hand turn the engine over so the piston comes up to TDC so the valve does not drop down into the cylinder.

Worth a go?
