BMW 6 Series

As I have far too much time on my hands at the moment I'm thinking about my next work horse.

Even though I don't like BMW's, I actually quite fancy a BMW 640i Diesel.

Probably around the 2013-14-15 vintage.

Anyone had one? Thought?

I had a 2005 635i years ago and loved it. Mate has a 15 640d and it is a very impressive piece of kit, fast with great economy but likes to step out at the back. They look great and are cheap. Back seats are useless!

Frank has a fully loaded 2017 640D GranCoupe and despite hating diesels I think he rather likes it. He got it re-mapped and it now has about 400bhp and 580lbs/ft. The guy mapping it also re-programmed the synthesised engine noise to an M6 and it now it sounds, and feels, like an American muscle car; smooth, long geared, fast and burbly. Very weird to experience it!

I loved my Mark but the newer one is even better. I have driven a 6 series Grancoupe diesel and its a great looking car and lovely place to be for a daily drive. Comfy , handles well and it shifts. Don't think there are many at this price range that I would go for except maybe an E Class Coupe of the same vintage....Both great daily drives......Drive one and see what you think.

I had one of the last 650 Sport V8 convertibles. I wouldn’t describe it as ‘sporty’ but certainly a comfortable place to spend time and lovely on a sunny day with the top down. Reliable and a wonderful engine even if it was a little bit lethargic for its size. Had it for 3 years with zero problems.

I had a ragtop 6 series diesel as my daily driver for a bit. I really liked it, nothing went wrong and it always got admiring glances but it just wasn't practical for me.

1 - I lived in a rural area and regulalry destroyed tyres and a couple of alloys
2 - the rear seats are a joke
3 - the boot (as with all ragtops) was a joke

A few other things to know. Low to mid 30s MPG was what I was getting driving it properly (although I could get 40 on a run if I was sensible (ish). Insurance was surprisingly expensive and finding a good indie was tricky (I have never found a good BMW MD and would avoid them like the plague).

If you think of it as a huge 2 seater GT (not a sports car) and that is what you want, it is pretty competent.

I’ve had an E Class. But for similar money I think the E Class Coupe looks a bit odd. Hence looking away from Merc for a change.
Will have to drive one I think.

Yep, the E Class coupe has that funny rear quarter light that looks odd but I guess that is the price of no B pillar and fully opening windows. Cab does not have the same problem.

As a alternative the C43 Coupe is now pretty cheap, sounds good and has 4WD.

Too small for me, and it's petrol and too pricey for my workhorse budget.

I hankered after the 635CSi from the 80's - the M-series one with the Getrag gearbox with dog-leg first gear. Went to look at 630CSi in Birkenhead, (Thought there was only the 2.8 and 3.5 in UK) but it was knackered, rough as feck and engine rocked like mad - mountings gone I reckon.

Seen one recently, I don't think the styling has stood the test of time unlike the earlier series.

I disagree - I still think the 635CSI is one of the best looking cars ever made.

I am continually on the look out for a good one to restore (missed the boat on M series) ... or perhaps an 840 but they are silly money for dogs now.

I had an '06 M6 V10 for a year, loved it except rear seats useless and 19mpg on a run. Had a '18 M6 GC for 6 months, very comfortable, rear seats good but boring to drive unless travelling a long way beyond speed limits. Prefer my 750i or Range Rover for daily drivers (big/comfortable/lazy) and a nice contrast to the Maserati!

Had a 08 630i sport. Hated it, one of my least favourite cars and that's saying something, only 2nd to an Sri Vectra. Didnt handle, didnt go, didnt have a cup holder, **** connectivity, unreliable. The 640s are no doubt a step up but the only one I'd consider is the m6 and even then I'd be worried about the engine popping. Plenty better cars for the cash imo - suggest you take one for a spin and make your own mind up though as the later ones are no doubt better.

I was gutted when I couldn’t afford the insurance on a 635CSi ended up with a V reg 735i amazing car, big, comfortable, no slouch, ran it into the ground.

I recon if your found out driving a German car on here, for your penance you have to donate £100 to the NHS!

So who's going first?
